Were to stay?

We are re-visiting Malta for the first time in 50 years! Not sure where to stay. Going for about ten days end Sept/beginning of October and are thinking of staying in Marsaskala at the moment. We are not beachy people, like to walk a bit and look around, also prefer to use local transport. Don't like anywhere too "English" nor too busy - would visit Valletta but not want to stay there. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

If you will be relying on bus services to get around, be aware that you will have to travel via Valletta to get to most of the places of interest on the Island. It will also be a very long trip to the ferry if you want to visit Gozo.

We're going mid October and I'm trying to decide between Marsaskala and Birzebugga. Any ideas which is the nicest not too touristy Maltese village?

@Trotamundos - Of the two you have listed, Marsaskala is the nicest as Birzebugga is just a small town with a nice beach overlooking a huge container port - see maltainsideout.com/2621/… . However, if you want a town with virtually no foreign tourists, then go for Birzebugga.

You could do worse than check out the Three Cities area, and in particular Vittoriosa - friends of mine spent a week in Marsaskala earlier this year and were most disappointed.

Thanks for suggestions. Prefer to be on Malta and visit Gozo. We looked at 3 cities area but no reasonably priced one bed self-catering properties available. We're hiring a car so plan to do day trips out and about and see everywhere possible in the time!

With a car I would opt for Mellieha or Qawra. Qawra is a resort but you are talking about a quieter period in early October. I'm sure you recall the North is more scenic, especially Mellieha and nowhere is really that far away for a trip out in the car....................

Forget Mellieha or Qawra if you want a place not so touristy. Marsaskala is a nice place to stay, well connected with public transport. There are also a good number of restaurants to choose from and a number of pubs to hang around even during the day. A walk along the promenade is a good way to relax. The Three cities are only a 10 minutes drive by car, 30 minutes by bus. For Valletta add 10 minutes. Gozo may turn out to be too quite in October, with nowhere to go in the evenings

Thanks - we're now booked into an apartment in Marsaskala and have hired a car. We prefer quiet - that's we travel in October and out of the summer holiday season!
