Mdina on your own?

Is it possible to see Mdina without taking the cruise ship's guided tour?

If so what is the best way to do this?(from Valletta) Also are cab fares reasonable or is bus the only way to go?

You can go by bus from just outside Valletta city gate. It's also possible to go by cab but fear that on "cruise ship days" the prices become somewhat more inflated.

Another option is to use a private tour guide who can arrange it all for you. Email: info@guideinmalta.com for details.

Thank you. Are the buses easy to negotiate?

Yes. There are an awful lot of them at the Depot/Turnaround and all yellow. There is, however, an inspectors booth for enquiries and feel quite confident that if you were to ask one of the other drivers they would point you in the right direction.

Just as a thought. Make sure you take something to cover your shoulders for entry into religious buildings vest type tops are not really appreciated.

the best thing to do is just get the bus from the city gates at valleta. all you need to do is find out what number it is and it takes you direct to mdina city gates and just jump back on the bus at the same place and all busses go back to valleta. as scubapro says, take something to cover yourself up a little bit because you dont want to miss any sights at this truly wonderful place. he knows his stuff about malta. we went on an afternoon tour of rabat mdina and mosta dome but it is only a couple of afternoons a week. it cost 3 lm each wheras the bus will cost you about 50c. happy travels and dont miss out.

The advantage of a tour or taxi is that you get to Mdina within 20 minutes. To catch a bus you need to walk (up) to the station and wait.... so you get to Mdina in 45minutes to an hour. If the ship is in Malta for an entire day this is no big deal. If you only have 4-5 hours in port, you hardly see anything.

Alternatively take a taxi around some other sights, finishing in Mdina and spend 3 hours there, and take the bus back to Valletta. Remember the cost is per taxi so if you travel with 2 more people, the cost becomes reasonable.

good point about how long the ship is in port. We have 1pm to 7 pm so sharing a taxi might be a good idea. thanks.
