Valletta one day from a cruise ship

An Australian couple in the wrong half of our 70s, we will be in Valletta for one day - Friday November 10 - when the Celebrity Constellation calls there.

What should we try to do while there? Are any tour operators recommended? Any other suggestions?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Ralph

Depends how much time you have onshore! And also to some extend what the weather is like on 10 November. Allow sufficient time to get back to the cruise. If you look at the top questions re Valletta on the right of your opening post you'll see FAQ arriving by cruise ship - some help please. Read that and come back with more questions if you have any.

I would spend the whole day in Valletta .

It is a very small city and assuming you can walk OK just spend the day wandering about.

Spend a little time in the Upper Barrakka Gardens , visit the cathedral, enjoy a coffe in one of the cafes and just walk about and enjoy the historic city.

Definitely visit the cathedral in Valletta! it is one of our treasures :D and just go round and wander the streets .. stop to eat in one of the good restaurants and absorb the city life.

Try and get a private driver and go to Mdina so worthwhile. We met a couple onboard who joined us and went there and to a gorgeous fishing village for lunch something like Mkssalox then still had time to wander round Valletta.cost was very reasonable and we got the private driver through shore excursions on board.

The fishing village will of being Marsaxlokk one of Malta's main fishing ports and unique in the fact you can see all the traditional colourful fishing boats in its harbour,it's also known for its fish restaurants some of the best in Malta are there,

Just hang fire on the private car and driver tho untill you cost it and work out timings because the roads are very congested in Malta for such a small island and getting from A to Be will take a lot longer than you think because of traffic, also note Valletta is a walled city most traffic isn't allowed in apart from taxis in certain places, residential and deliveries traffic, and the shuttles from the port up too the city, that's why the main bus station is located outside it's city gates,if you have anything less than 6 hours in port, then my advice is stay in Valletta, more than 6 hours then maybe mdina as this would allow you 3/4 hours there with eneugh time to make sure you make it back to your ship in time.

Like you we are the wrong half of 70, and were in Malta for a half day in June on Sea Princess. We decided to do the big red hop on hop off bus, rather than one of the ship organised tours. This was a mistake and I would not recommend the Malta bus at all. They are not all that clean, and the earphone jacks do not all work in all of the seats, so if you have one of those you will have no idea if what you are seeing. However that is not the issue. The driver we had was training as a race car driver I am sure, and was obviously out to break the record for getting back to base early. I finished up with no usable photos at all as we were thrown around so much. Mind you he did get us back to Valetta 20 minutes early so that meant he could knock off on time. This was a real waste of time and money in what should have been a great destination.
