what to do in Valletta in just 5 hours.

Our cruise ship is making a very short stop in Valletta (11am -4pm),

Any suggestions on what we should see as we dont have a lot of time there.

Looking for places of interest within asy walking distance of the port.

How much to the taxis cost?

Do the local buses stop near the harbour?

Thanks Em1

If you are staying in Valletta you can take the bus /number 198

www.atp.com.mt/atp/servlet/ControllerServlet…

All the places of interest in Valletta can be reached on foot .

There are a bit of inclines in valletta but still ok unless you are not fit .

My list would include St John Cathedral and Museum, The Palace Armoury, The Archeological Museum , The Upper Barrakka for the View

You dock at the Valletta Waterfront . Many people take the bus or taxi up the hill to Valletta and walk back to the ship.

Barakka Gardens overlooks the Grand Harbour, lovely view and you'll also see your ship.

There are lots of al fresco cafes in Valletta.

Read the Insider page posted by Hat and others in this site

Lots of photos and videos too .

You do not have time to see half of the things ...come back after you finish the cruise to see the rest of Malta and Gozo.

Enjoy your taster !

If 4pm is the time your ship sails, than I wouldn't bother with the bus, take a taxi, or you really won't have time to stroll round Valletta.

St Johns Co-Cathedral is a splendid building and it's museum is also well worth a visit (but I doubt you'll have time for that).

Thanks everyone for the very useful info.

We have never cruised before and never been to Malta before so really looking forward to visiting -- what appears to be a lovely friendly island.

We will not be there until Jan 2010 and but im sure it will be well worth the wait.

Thanks EM1

I'm sure you'll enjoy your cruise. What ship will you be on ? Have you been to the sister site - Cruise Critic - it has lots of info especially for first time cruisers ?

Keep in touch and tell us how you got on.

Many people look forward to Italy and don't realise how much Malta has to offer. Plus there is the advantage that Malta is small so you don't waste so much time in traveling.

I could never understand why the ship's excursions are so expensive.

I don't remember if someone already mentioned them but there are also the hop on buses which you can board from the cruise terminal - I imagine they will be working in January.

Thanks-- i will let you know how i enjoy Malta. As i said - we are not there until jan 2010.

If its as nice as it sounds then we will be back for a longer trip in the summer of 2010.

I would much prefer the extra time in Malta instead of Rome as it seems more relaxed and laid back- just our kind of place.

Thanks EM1

Rome is a lovely city - however, the port you dock at is an industrial port and very unattractive. You have to take a shuttle bus to get out of it then you have to get to the station then you have to wait for the train then you have a trip of about one and a half hours to get to Rome itself. If you don't know the city you feel rather disorientated.

Of course you could take a taxi or a ship excursion but that's putting up the price.

Malta is small and within a few minutes you could be in Valletta.

When we were in a cruise we went to Rome. We know the city well but you start to feel tense when you realise you have a long trip ahead of you and you have to catch a train to return to the port. I had visions of something happening to hold up the train and we'd miss the ship.

i might have considered taking a horse cab ride from the Cruise terminal and up to (and around Valletta). It would be a nice experience.
