Cyprus suggestions please.

Hi,

my partner and I are thinking of a visit to Cyprus next May for two weeks.

We would like to travel around the island staying over at upto three or four diffent locations.

We enjoy staying in the smaller towns and villages and prefer local apartments rather than hotels.

We would welcome any suggested itineries, places to stay and visit and the best airport to fly into.

Would we need to hire a car or could we use public transport around the island ?

thanks

My friend and I went to Cyprus May 06 intending to travel the island independently. We flew into Paphos and, although I found it difficult, I had prebooked a hotel there for the first 2 nights. We went on to Pissouri, then Limosol and then Larnaca. Cyprus is not really set up for roaming travellers, and although we did find good standard accommodation, it was obvious that it was unusual practice, turning up looking for rooms!

I have been back 3 times since and each time have booked my accommodation (usually small studios/apartments) before I go - there's lots to be found on the internet, and at reasonable rates. I always hire a car as public transport is very limited. As Cyprus is not a huge island, you can see much of it from 2 or 3 bases with a car.

Enjoy!

Don't rely on public transport - almost non existent. You should definitely hire a care. West side of island, Paphos, lovely coastline, little villages in the mountains, close to the Akamas peninsular. East side, best beaches. Both Paphos and Larnaca are close enough for you to reach the Troodos mountains. Plenty of little villages and if you go "off season" you should be able to find accommodation easily. I have only flown into Larnaca which is an OK airport - depending on the time of day you arrive you can generally pick up your case and be out of the airport within an hour of landing. Roads are very easy to negotiate, same side driving as the UK, road signs very clear - keep to speed limits though. You might like to look at a Cyprus agrotourism site where you can stay in traditional little villages.

A car is a must in Cyprus since there is no public transport. Just to add to the previous replies try visiting villages like Lefkara, Katodrys (Larnaca Area), Tochni, Kalavasos (in Limassol Area), Troodos Area as well as Paphos and Polis district and various villages there, in order to meet tradition and some "authentic" Cyprus. Towns may not worth the trip! I would definately spend a few days in Paphos District, then move to Troodos area for a couple of days and then choose an agrotourism place to stay near Limassol or Larnaca and have day trips from there. Actually Cyprus is very small and if you don´t like packing luggages all the time you could stay for the entire period in one place (preferably in Limassol or Larnaca district which are more centrally located) and have day trips from there.

Enjoy
