First timers - where to go?

Hi y'all.

Seriously considering Cyprus for the first time next year. Probably 2 weeks late September. No idea which part to go to. Love Kefalonia, Paleokastritsa that kind of thing. Will prob hire a car to have a little looksee, like shopping, markets etc, but love nice sandy beaches as well. Hate crowds.

Any suggestions?

Thanks everso.

Protaras/Pernera/Agia Napa area has best beaches on the island,Pernera is the quietest of the three although prefer Protaras myself

I notice your a Skala fan...........me too ;)

You'll struggle to find somewhere comparable on Cyprus, it's obviously much bigger and more commercialised. But there are some hidden gems. As mentioned above if the beach is important to you then it's got to be the east of the island, fantastic beaches. See the page in the Ayia Napa forum Top Questions, I've posted all the local beaches in the area. You'd be best to consider Pernera or Kapparis if you dislike crowds. Maybe look at hiring a villa in either and hiring a car to get around and explore. Driving is a doddle in Cyprus even allowing for the locals :)

Hi,If you hate crowds have a look at Pissouri, both the village and the bay have stunning scenery and retains much of its traditional charm, while being quieter than most resorts there are plenty of restaurants to keep you going the only thing is the beach is pebble, but Pissouri is a great base for getting about.

I agree that Cyprus is nothing like Kefalonia or Paleokastritsa. I have been to both places and they are great but Cyprus is completely different. You would probably need to travel around the island to find the different elements of those places I am not sure that one place has anything like it. As has been said it is much busier and more commercialised.

Thanks everyone for that. Just the kind of info I was looking for. Pissouri sounds like a good choice for my requirements. I'll investigate there and Pernera a little more.

Apparently driving is 'a doddle'? What's the airport like - usual queues?

Driving is really easy as it is on the same side as UK and there is little traffic.

There are two airports; Larnaca, which is best for resorts in the East like Pernera and Paphos, which is best for Pissouri.

Both airports are just like any other airport, with Larnaca being bigger and busier as it serves many international destinations.

The driving is a doddle...........just like driving at home, same side, same road signs in English, good road network. I actually find Larnaca Airport very civilised from a queuing perspective as they always seem to have so many desks open the queues are gone before they've started :)

Hi, I agree with the above Larnaca airport is speedy usually off the plane and out of the airport in about 15-20 minutes ,check in usually fairly quick I also find paphos airport ok that one is closer to Pissouri, about 20 minutes drive, Larnaca to pissouri about 1 hour , pernera around 40 minutes but if traveling in high season try to avoid sun-wed when a lot of the tour companies fly.both of the airports are modern Larnaca new airport which opened in 2009 is lovely.sept is one of my favorite months to visit Cyprus.Julie

Just a small correction, Larnaca to Pissouri is more like 90 minutes.
