Kyrenia for 1st timers with kids 12 & 10, villas preferred?

Desperately searching for a new destination after going to Turkey 3 times in a row as we loved it SO, N Cyprus seems to fit the bill, strange eh??!

We would like somewhere close to main restaurants, shops etc, not too bothered about the beach as we tend to stay around the pool or go on excursions. We like the option not to hire a car but it seems from all my research so far, that a car is likely to be necessary. Would prefer a small villa with a private pool if possible or would anyone know of a small hotel with villas in the grounds which isn't too noisy? I've seen some very interesting posts on this forum so would love to get some advice and views about the area during the school holidays (late July 09). Thanks.

I suggest you look at reviews for Almond Village,It sounds as if it would be just up your street in most respects.

I would recommend you look at www.holidaylettings.co.uk or www.ownersdirect.co.uk both of which have excellent selections of villas in Northern Cyprus.

You will definitely need a car to really enjoy your holiday and they are reasonably priced and the driving is on the left like the UK so pretty easy.

There is plenty to do with your children: horse riding, go karting, castles, watersports, boat trips etc. Ours love the place and it is a safe environment.

The weather in July is going to be very hot (40s) so make sure you have plenty of suncream or even better bring old t shirts for swimming in. Kids tend to live in the water and by keeping them covered it is easier than constant re-creaming.

Have a wonderful holiday.

When looking at private villas, I would recommend Alsancak as a good base. Close to lots of restaurants and the beach. Approximately 10-15 minutes drive into Kyrenia by car or Dolmus.

Thanks for all your posts. ncypruslover, how funny, you live near me as we are in Merton Park. We are looking at Almond Holiday Village as it seems to be a good compromise between a hotel and villa. Does anyone know if it is close to ther restaurants and bars etc so we are not tied into the hotel to eat?

Could I also ask if there are any good ABTA/ATOL agents who might specialise in N Cyprus? Thanks again.

For an ATOL agent specialising in TRNC speak to Tom at IAH - www.flightholiday.co.uk

Tom has vast experience of NC (he has a home there) and is a very helpful chap.

hi

we visited NC, with our childrem 15 & 10, for the first time this august. we stayed im ozankoy which is east of kyrenia. this area has the advantage of being within a few minutes drive of kyrenia and bellapais and also had some superb local restaurants. however, we were a little disappointed with the beaches in this area and felt that the areas to the west of kyrenia were better for this and just seemed a little more 'geared up' somehow.

we rented a private villa with pool and this worked really well for our family as the kids could escape into the house when it was too hot and we could remain outside. also there are no restrictions on swimming times and we really loved our late night swims. another advantage is that you can purchase supermarket food and drinks to enjoy around the pool and not have to buy these from the hotel bar. there is a huge choice of villas on the websites mentioned earlier in this post, so you probably just need to decide on an area that you fancy.

we had a lovely, relaxing holiday. hope you get yours sorted

Hi. Did you have a good choice of restaurants in Ozankoy whithin walking distance and would you recommend the villa that you stayed in? I agree with the comments about not having to buy stuff at the hotel bars and having late night swims, it's such fun for the kids. Not too bothered about the beaches though really as we went to Dalyan, Turkey last year and only managed to get to the beaches 3 times in 3 weeks as we tend to hang around the villa or go off and explore (beaches are great, it's just all that sand!!). I'll be lloking at OwnersDirect as they tend to have a fairly good choice.

Choirgirl

I would highly recommend staying west of Kyrenia, somewhere like Yesiltepe, Alsancak area - near Escape of Denizkizi beaches. There are a whole load of brilliant restaurants between Alsancak and Kyrenia too, all my favourite ones are this side.
