kyrenia for christmas

Thinking of visiting northern cyprus at Christmas. Any advice on what the weather will be like and good places to stay. Family of four kids are 9 and 11. Prefer a hotel with an indoor pool as suspect there may be days when not that warm. Any help gratefully accepted. Visited Kyrenia 25 years ago and always said I would go back!

We went to Kyrenia at xmas and new year about 7 years ago and we had a great time in spite of the weather which that year was very cold and rainy.the social life that time of year was great, much better than at home.and also it is a great time of year to do all the sightseeing that is too hot to do in the hot summer months.

You are right to stay somewhere with an indoor pool as it will be too chilly to swim outdoors.we stayed in Kyrenia as everything was going on there, all the shops were open on xmas day as the locals dont seem to celebrate xmas as we do at home.

If you are going for the weather you may be disappointed but you will have a great time otherwise.

Hi. If it is a well run down to earth family hotel you are after, I recommend the Mountain View hotel which is just outside Kyrenia. We stayed their when we were first buying property 5 years ago, and now that we are residents in North Cyprus, we always find ourselves spending the Christmas and New year period with them. Why, you may ask? Firstly, they are family run who can not do enough for you. It just generates a homely atmosphere that we love. Also, with one of the owners being from England(Sue), she ensures that Christmas day runs as smoothly as possible as she is slightly more aware of how Christmas works in comparison with other Cypriot hotels. With the hotel also having two resident dogs in Mountain & Jungle, we can't help but to bring them a present every year! There is also plenty for the kids to do with table tennis, pool table, tennis court, and Satelite TV facilities.

Hi bridge. Yes, I agree with the comment above. I am a friend of one of the owners at the Mountain View, and I think your family would love to be their. Most of the people that go back for christmas are usually repeats(ourselves included). Talk to Sue and she will be able to tell you about whats on offer(entertainment wise) for christmas eve, christmas day, and new year. Her email is mountainviewcyprus@hotmail.com

I hope this helps.

You must remember that Northern Cyprus is muslim and they don't celebrate Christmas like we do. New Year is more of a time for celebration there although ny festivities will be mainly for the tourists and the ex-pats.

I was in Kyrenia in mid December a couple of years ago and the weather was wet but not cold. The locals were togged up in duffle coats and scarves and hats but I just wore jeans and a light jacket.

If I was staying over Christmas I think I would stay in one of the smaller hotels. I know that the Onar Village Hotel in particular has an open fireplace in the winter and they have an indoor pool and gym. Some of the larger hotels can seem a bit cold in the winter.

I recommend Almond hollyday village, a family run hotel, with the most beautiful garden in the north. The customers are mostly english(except)me , christmas is celebr as the owners come from England. They also have a fire place and an indoor bar.

Onar is a good place , but outside kyrenia.

Whilst also spending the last few Christmas' at the Mountain View Hotel, I have found that us ex-pats seem to be in favour of a crowded gathering eating together at Christmas. I think this is why we are most looking forward to it at the Mountain View again this year. Last year there must have been in the region of 60 people(most old friends) sitting around a square table together for Christmas day lunch. There was the option to be seated separately, but no one vouched for this understandably.

Before the meal, guests were drinking and playing board games in the Blue Bar, next to the fireplace(which wasn't needed until the evening). After this, we were escorted to the dining room to be served a three course meal. Each seating place had a christmas cracker with the Christmas day lunch including turkey, stuffing, roast potatoes, sausage wrapped in bacon, with Christmas pudding for afters. When the meal was finished, a large portion of the guests drifted off to watch the football in bar. The evening ended with live music until just after 12.

I hope this has helped described the atmosphere of the day, and truely feel your family would love to be a part of it.
