First timers to North Cyprus - please help with my questions

Hi there everyone,

We are going to Kyrenia next week and staying in a villa on Benan Sokak in Ozankoy. Has anyone any idea how close this is walking distance to Kyrenia bars and restaurants and the harbour?

Secondly we are looking to go to Turtle Bay, is this the right time of year to see hatching chicks? The websites I have looked at give conflicting information. If yes, then how do we get there? (We are hiring a car)

Finally - any other tips on places to see; eat or visit would be greatly appreciated. This is probably the only opportunity we are going to get to visit Cyprus so we really want to make the most of it.

All comments very welcome.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I would recommend a visit to the castles at St Hilaire and kyrenia. i would also recommend Nicosia of course. The trip to the Blue house is worth the time as is a couple of hours at Bellapais. I didn't rate the drive out on the Karpaz peninsula but a lot of others do. Famagusta and Salamis was also a good day out. We did not stay in Kyrenia so I can't answer the other questions

Have a nice time

Hi

Turtle Bay is a housing development, You may mean Turtle beach, www.cyprus44.com/holidays/turtle-watching.asp

Ozankoy is 5-10minutes away from Kyrenia Harbour, by car, there are a few bars and restaurants in Ozankoy Village though.

Hi

The Blue House is on an army base at a place called Camlibel - you need a passport to surrender at the gate an then you get it back as you come out. It was the house of a local gun running mafia man and we thought it was really interesting.

Karpaz just wasn't for us. We have travelled a fair bit and seen some really good scenery/landscapes in our time. We thought that the peninsula was a long drive for not very much. The view that you get in the first 5 to 10 miles is pretty well it and it is not really that interesting. The Monastry at the end is over rated so far as we were concerned and the area around it is scruffy and delapidated. Having said that, there are a lot of people who speak highly of the trip and it really is just a matter of taste. if you do decide to go, there is a large sweep of beach just before you get to Dirkarpaz. it is a turtle nesting beach but the best thing is that it is not commercialised in any way and was very quiet when we went in August.

hope that this helps

I have just had an email from one of the people who run the turtle conservation project. She informs me that the nests to the west of the island have all hatched but she didn't have up to date info for Alagadi beach. They do post daily information on their website each day to inform those interested as to which site will be having excavations that day; http://www.cyprusturtles.org/
