Can you give us some advice please

Hi All.

We are a family of 5 (Mum, Dad, 2Boys & a girl) and are making our first visit to Cyprus to the Atlantica Balmyra, Aparthotel at the end of Aug. we have been told that there is some building work going on next to the hotel and we are just a little concerned about noise. Could anyone advise us of situation ?

We are looking forward to seeing the island and will be renting a car when we arrive so we can travel out and about.

If anyone can give us any tips or advice that would be great.

You haven't mentioned the ages of the children but I am assuming between 5 - 15 years could be the range.

There is a wonderful waterpark on the outskirts of Limassol and a day there will be enjoyed by all. It is surrounded by the citrus plantations and so very good surroundings.

Go up in the mountains, I usually use the road up from Erimi off the Highway and visit Omodos for a drink and look around. I warn you that unfortunately the locals have started turning every house into a shop which is spoiling the atmosphere but it is still worth a visit. Then visit Vouni with the Donkey Sanctuary (closed on Sundays), there the children and yourselves can feed the donkeys with food you buy up there. You can have a drink or buy a souvenir, even adopt a donkey. The countryside up there is beautiful. If you go higher still you could visit Platres, or Kykkos Monastery. Personally I think the Monastery is better done on a coach so that everyone can enjoy the views, since the last couple of miles are quite tedious for the driver.

Governors Beach, and the Elias Country Club are also worth a visit.

At Curium, or Kourion there is the amphitheatre on the top of the hill nearer the road, but the beach road leads to a good bay for surfing, with three tavernas on it. If you prefer a beach with shallower slopes then try Ladies Mile but a word of warning do make sure you ttake the road slowly right to Ladies Mile Restaurant and not be misled to stop at Ladies Smile!

Just enjoy the beaches around have your swimming things with you so that when you find a beach you fancy you can make use of it.

There are old castles to visit as well in Limassol and Kolossi as well as Larnaca and Paphos.

I hope the building work will not affect your holidays. Nowadays the tour operators are obliged to tell us everylittle bit of work and this sometimes sounds much worse than it actually is.

Just got back and can reply on building works.

Bad. Immediately next door is a 6 story hotel block being renovated, internally and externally. Woken at 06:45 most mornings by generators/compressors and kango drills by 07:00. Constructors yelling instructions to each other. A tall crane occupies the site. Work going on 7 days a week (quieter on sundays)..and sometimes a few wrokers are on site as late as 19:00.

That morning noise was unacceptable. During the day it is not obtrusive..even from the pool from where you can pleasantly float in the pool and watch the workers next door.

The building is downwind so no building dust or smell problems.

Our First Choice rep claimed the work would cease from 1 August as Cyprus took 3 week holiday. We didnt see that. Indeed the first week of August was noisier than ever according to other guests we asked.

Good news....It did seem quieter this week. Site was closed to access some days ..yet there seemed to be a handful of workers doing a mix of carpentry and brick work. Hunch..some key contractors are trying to catch up to schedule during a closed period.

So in summary....be warned. Could be bad. We didnt complain. We were on far side of hotel to the work and liked the town location for our walking (no car) holiday. Others did complain.

Location of hotel is great. Right on the cost. Sea view from small balcony. Shingle beach becomes sandy bottom 10feet out from shore. Sandy beaches exist either side of hotel. Refreshing wind/breeze makes small uncrowded poolside very pleasant. Noisey nightclubs exist but all out of earshot so location offers you plenty of evening choices without disruption of noise in evenings.

Plenty of bars and restaurants in walking distance. Also McDonalds, Burger King (good vouchers given with orders), KFC.

Main road is 75 yards away. Thick trees and other buildings block all but worst of the road noise. Very good car parking..in private carpark (controlled by barrier) and screened from hot sun by thick overhanging trees which will keep your parked car cool in hot sun.

Hotel is small by comparison to other Atlantica hotels. Offers no evening entertainment except poolside bar (no swimming after 6pm..unles you fancy a sea dip). The main Atlantica hotel is 10mins walk away..that has a very big noisey/entertainment crowded feel to it. We didnt like it.

Good luck on the Air travel on whatever you decide to do.
