Paphos Town, Coral Bay, Kato Paphos - Im confused!

Hello,

I've been a in a few posts so you may have seen me on the board!

We have decided that Paphos is definately the place in Cyprus we want to go to (we've not been before) however, after trawling through what feels like every brochure and hotel website on the planet I'm a bit confused by what is considered 'Paphos'.

Where do we want to be? What is a good location - we'd like to be able to walk to bars and restaurants as are planning on going B&B.

We keep finding nice hotels and then it says they are 6km from Paphos, but does this mean the town itself as I believe that this is slightly inland?

Also, I'm addicted to other peoples opinions on here and get put off very easily by bad comments - so I'd welcome your personal recommendation son nice hotels in a good location!

Thanks!

Helen x

Hi Helen,

I came back from Cyprus in April and I too had trawled all the websites etc looking at resorts & self catering !

Paphos itself is a big big resort, the hotel area is massive and some of them are too far a walk from the harbour/bar/restaurant area.

However there is always a selection of bars & eateries around them, all depends how close to the beach you want to be, how lively a resort you want and what you want to pay..

We stayed at place called Coral Bay, roughly 20 minute drive/bus to Paphos centre.

Our self catering complex right on the beach was the Corrallia Beach Apartments, outside & a 5 minute walk a handful of restaurants, but a bus to Coral Bay town leaves the hotel every 10 minutes or you can walk it, there is then a strip of bars etc...

I have written a review on it if you're interested.

But yes, a lot of the s/c resorts were a few kilometres out of Paphos.

Anything you want to know drop us a line :-)

Kato Paphos is the newer tourist area near the promenade and harbour in Paphos. It is where a lot of the hotels are located. You are really in the thick of things here.

Another area is the Tombs of the Kings Road area. There are bars, restaurants and hotels in this area too.

Coral Bay is located approximately 12kms from Kato Paphos along the coastal road. There are hotels located all along this road. Some of the big ones that you see advertised are on this stretch. The problem with some of these hotels is that they are a bit isolated as they are neither in Paphos nor Coral Bay. However, there are usually a couple of restaurants and bars nearby and the bus runs past in both directions at regular intervals.

Finally, the Old Town is located slightly inland from Kato Paphos. The old town is not really a tourist area so you wont find hotels there.

If you are looking at hotels that are located 6kms from Paphos, I would suggest that these are probably located along the coastal road between Paphos and Coral Bay.

Finally, make sure you do plenty of research before taking someone's bad report on board. It is a fact that people who have had a very bad experience or a very good experience are more likely to post a review or make a complaint/compliment. The vast majority of people will have had a satisfactory time and will not bother to post. If you see somewhere you like the look of, research it on all the travel portals and ask questions about the place specifically before making a decision. You will be surprised how many people will come out of the woodwork with an opinion.

We like, the other poster, stayed at Corallia Beach in Coral Bay and found it great for our needs. We are due to return in four weeks time. It really depends on what you want and who you are travelling with....i,e, couple who want the nightlife then I would suggest Paphos rather than Coral Bay but if you want a relaxing holiday for 2 and not too bothered about discos etc then Coral Bay. Likewise we travel with two youngish children and find Coral Bay ideal for us....not too rowdy so the kids (and adults) can sleep at night!! My review is also on the review page but mine was done nearly three years ago so the more recent one as recommened by lilpiggy will be more accurate and up to date.

If you want more advice, just ask!

hi we went to coral bay last october, and the resort is not bad, its quiet and had a handfull of restaurants, one thats really nice called poseidons, i think, its got horses on the wall inside.you have a long walk to get the beach when staying in coral bay, we were at the end away from the beach beside the ascos, the beach is nice but we did find it expensive.there are a few shops , convenience stores there and there prices are not cheap at all, obe in particular with indians serving is very expensive, bottles of booze , biscuits etc etc.we hired a car and drove along to phaphos which is nicer as evrything is at hand and there are supermarkets that sell allsorts, much cheaper than the small stores in coral bay, the harbour is nice also, some places are pricey, a hot dog a one was around 6 cyrus pounds, terrible, but paphos is the better of the two, there is a markey in paphos, not that we ever found it, but would have liked to and there are boat trips etc all at hand and it just feels more greek, hope this helps you and doesnt put you off, imo i would favour paphos

Hi Helen

holiday2cyprus.co.uk/paphos_hotels_map.htm

here's a link showing the hotel locations in Kato Paphos. To give you some idea between 56 - 48 there are some very good hotels well served with good restaurants and bars in the area known locally as 'the triangle' and easily walkable to the harbour area without being in the thick of it. Between 32 - 38 you'll be spoilt for choice but it is extremeley busy with traffic noise (and Bar St). I don't know much about the Tomb of the Kings area, but it's walkable. Coral Bay area for me isn't Paphos and you'd need a car or taxi to get about - there are buses but they get full in the evenings.

I'd suggest you look at the reviews to get a feel for the area along Poseidonos Avenue area to see if this suits your needs. I know you were thinking of the Aquamare and whilst nice you'll notice it's off that map. What I'd also advise is to consider the beach side properties, lovely landscaped gardens, free sunbeds/facilities which you would have to pay for if you fancied a change from the pool at an inland property.

Hope this helps.

Hi Helen

If you have the map of the hotels just to give you some idea of distance. We have stayed at the Paphos Amathus Beach and the Elysium both on opposite sides of the harbour but both are within walking distance of the harbour (10 mins). There are lots of restaurants in and around the Amathus but not so many on the other side near the Elysium. There are lots of lovely hotels and apartments in Paphos. As someone else has pointed out Kato Paphos is the area of shops etc around the harbour. The old town is up the hill and inland. Otherwise it is really just one long road with a good bus service which goes all the way to Coral Bay.

WOW! Thank you for all your advice!

Whilst we are a young 30 (it'll be my 30th the day before we go!) and 35 we don't really 'do' disco's but we do like sitting in bars people watching and would like restaurants so I think that the Kato Paphos area sounds more like what were after.

If we were bringing the young one, my other halves daughter who's 10 then maybe Coral Bay would be better for her.

I'll be printing off all your replies and having a look at the map with the hotels on - I had found this myself but didn't know which end was which!!

Thanks very much - I'll let you know where we decide - it might be Hotel Aloe but there are so many mixed reviews!!

Helen - The Aloe is in a super location in Kato Paphos. It is handy for the beach (there is one right across the road) and the harbour area. It is within walking distance of the aquapark too.

My parents stayed there earlier this year and all the rooms were being re-carpeted and refurbished.

Dazza a friend of a work colleague is getting married at the st.georges and it look AMAZING - but from what I gather its a bit out of the way.

If you click on the map link a few posts previous that has the Louis on so you can see where that is in relation to things.
