One day trip to Monaco from Cannes

I'll be on the Norwegian Epic and stopping at port of Cannes on Friday June 9. I am thinking of doing the tour called "Monaco on your own" which provides a private bus to and from a location in Monaco for $109. I also have a $50 credit on excursions per port so it would actually only cost me $60.

The ship is expected to dock at 8AM, the tour/bus ride begins at 9AM, should arrive at Monaco shortly after 10AM, and would have to meet a little before 3PM to get back to the ship by 4PM. That would give me 5 hours of free time. If I choose this tour, would it be possible to take a train to Nice, walk around for a bit, +/- check out Eze, and return to Monaco for the bus ride back to Cannes?

What are the best things to see in Monaco, Cannes, and Nice? I most appreciate seeing the beaches, quaint markets, old architecture, etc. not the high end fashion stores and celebrity hangouts.

In five hours you can't do Nice, Eze and Monaco, no matter what means of transport you choose. If you use a taxi, you might manage Monaco and Eze, but the buses are infrequent and you wouldn't get back in time for the return bus.

So you need to make a choice. If you want to see Nice, you can do that by train from Cannes without spending any money on the excursion. If you want to see Monaco and Eze in five hours, get ready for a taxi fare (http://www.taximonacoprestige.com). And if you want to see Monaco and have time for a nice lunch, use the excursion bus or, for even less money, take the train.

I would use the excursion for safety of getting back on time and the ship not leaving without me.

What are some of the highlights of Nice and Monaco? I will leave Eze off the itinerary. I've read that there's little to see and do in Cannes so I wouldn't mind just driving through it.

I understand about not having the ship leave without you, but it is a complete waste of your time to take an excursion to Monaco and then leave immediately on a train to Nice, where you will have even less time, around 3 1/2 hours, to see anything before you need to return to Monaco, just for the purpose of getting the bus back.

Taking the train direct to Nice from Cannes is no more dicey than relying on a train from Nice to get you back to the coach in Monaco.

In Monaco, you might consider visiting the Prince's Palace, the Cathedral, the Oceanographic Museum, the Casino and the Exotic Gardens for many and varied reasons. In five hours, you can do all these, and travelling between them (I recommend bus route 2) will make a nice tour of the Principality. Or you could swap out one or two to have lunch somewhere on the port or one of the beach restaurants.

Sorry to the Monaco advocates but I'm now thinking of splitting my time between Nice and Cannes only, using the train.
