Questions about hotels and the beach

We are taking a week to spend around the Cote d'Azur - 2 nights in St Tropez, 2 nights in Nice then 2 nights in Monte Carlo. We've booked all but the hotel in Monte Carlo - just not sure where to book? We had a look at the Columbus Hotel, but it seems a bit far from where all the action is, around the port. Is it necessary to have a pool? Or is there a public pool and a decent beach to stay at a hotel with no pool? Or do you have a recommendation as to where we should stay, if our budget is approx 200-250€ per night?

When are you travelling? Nothing is very far from anywhere in Monaco but if it's beach/pool time you want you'll be wasting your money on moving around the Cote d'Azur. There is so much to do and see in the area.

It depends what you want out of Monte Carlo. It's true that the Columbus is not in the centre, but it's a very short bus ride away. Around the Columbus itself there are in fact lots of restaurants in Fontvieille Port. There's also the Princess Grace Rose Garden, and a couple of the bars in the port (Gerhard's and the Ship Inn) stay open until the early hours at weekends.

I think with Monaco, you either go the whole hog, or you do the budget thing. It's difficult to be satisfied with the "in-between". If it were me, I'd either stay at one of the upmarket hotels (Fairmont, Metropole, Meridien, Monte Carlo Beach or Monte Carlo Bay - probably not the Hotel de Paris) if you've decided the Columbus is not for you, or I'd go for the budget hotels in Beausoleil, which is just above Monaco. When I say just above, there are streets where you stand on one pavement and you're in Monaco, the opposite pavement is in Beausoleil in France.

As for pools, there are 3 public pools in Monaco, one in the stadium near the Columbus, an open air one in the port, and one (closed in August) as you go from Monaco into Beausoleil above and to the east of the Casino. The beach is decent, but quite small. There's also a beach about 15 mins walk from the Columbus, in Cap d'Ail in France.
