Help - Vegetarians travelling around Austria

My better half and I are travelling around Austria for ~10 days. We are spending 2-3 days in Vienna and then heading west -- to Melk, then Zell-am-See and the Zillertal.

We are vegetarian and I am concerned that outside Vienna, we may strike out. We don't know German, so asking for appropriate food in small-town restaurants could be difficult also. Can anyone advise us on types of places where we might get something suitable (we eat dairy and eggs).

Nowadays almost all restaurants have a page in their menu listing vegetarian dishes. Zell am See and the Zillertal Area are tourism-oriented places, so the majority of service personnel is able to speak English. Even in Melk people should understand at least a little English. You won't encounter any problems.

You will be quite well served in Vienna. The options become more limited outside. Most places in Vienna will at least serve Eiernockerl. The more traditional a place looks/is the fewer options available.

Some good vegetarian places in Vienna include Vegetasia and the Bio Bar. Also Turkish places typically have vegetarian options and I like Orient & Occident at the Naschmarkt. You should be fine in Vienna as it is rare to have no options at all and in a place that markets itself as highly traditional I still found a Gemüsestrudel.

If you like cheese then the most traditional vegetarian food is Spinatstrudel and you'll be able to survive on that. There's a good chance you can get it outside of Vienna.

Still, do come prepared - as a vegetarian mainland Europe is not the most welcoming of places for food.

Also Melk is absolutely lovely and I found a picnic in the grounds of the Abbey to be a delight. There's a few cafes/restaurants in the main street of the town and there should be vegetarian options. Not so sure the further away you get from the tourist trail but in the mountainous areas cheese will become your friend.

The German for vegetarian won't be too hard to remember.
