10 day itinerary

We are four couples + 6 kids traveling to Austria in July. Our main priority is scenic views, visiting cute alpine villages and some hiking. Also want to try to cover Vienna and Salsburg. Here is our preliminary itinerary to accomplish the above.

Fly in - Vienna 2 nights (Ride the ringstrasse, Schonbrunn palace, Stephens cathedral, Opera house)

Wolfgang 3 nights (Hallstatt/salt mines and surrounding villages; need to flush out some more)

Zell am see 2 nights (Gross glockner rd/village of Heiligenblut; hiking trails/cable cars maybe from Lienz)

Alpbach 2 nighs (hiking)

Salzburg 1 night(Mozart's birthplace, Outdoor concert; Hohensalzbrug fortress/funicular)

Fly out from Salzburg.

This is just an intial cut based on our priorities. Would appreciate your feedback/input. Thanks.

2 days in Vienna looks good.

Halstatt is great place, infact I would stay in Halstatt rather than Wolfgang.

I would like to recommend Gosau,a village not very far from Halstatt: …wordpress.com/my-travels-2/…

Do not stay in Hallstatt in July. It's peak season, Hotels will be expensive and will fill up fast. Village will be over run with tourists. If you want to be close to lake Hallstatt you would be far better off staying in Obertraun.

Do not stay in St Wolfgang if you are using public transport. It's the wrong side of the lake. It also will be very busy in July. If you want to be on the lake but in a quiet village with good bus links have a look at Strobl.

Bad Ischl also makes a good base with excellent transport links to Lakes Hallstatt, Traunsee and Wolfgang. Also lots to do in the historic town of Bad Ischl.

The aforementioned Gosau is beautiful and can be accessed via bus from Hallstatt/Obertraun/Bad Ischl. Not a good base though unless it's for hiking/cycling.

Thank you for all the good thoughts. Will look into the suggestions. We plan on renting a couple of vans for the entire duration of the trip.
