Help planning 6 days in Austria in August

Im looking for some ideas on how to spend 6 days in Austria. I would like to be based in 2 different locations for 3 nights each. maybe Salzburg and one other place? I would like to get a feel for the culture and landscape but will be relying on trains and public transport,

Any ideas would be great

There are plenty of options.

A few of our favorites:

Zell am See

Zillertal

Innsbruck area

Berchtesgaden, Germany and the area, not far from Salzburg.

Salzkammergut, but this area could be seen from Salzburg, but then so could Berchtesgaden.

I'd go with the Zillertal or Zell am See for 3 days in addition to Salzburg.

Salzburg as a city won't fill 3 days so you will probably head out into the surrounding countryside on day trips. So you have a couple of choices afterwards:

a) Go for a city in which case Vienna is the only real choice

b) Go more rural in which case my vote would go to the beautiful Zillertal

I would go for Vienna and Salzburg. but rather than stay in the city of Salzburg itself, stay a little bit out of town, in the salzkammergut area. beautiful lakes and mountains.
