36 hours. Innsbruck or Salzburg

My wife and I will be traveling through and have 36 hours to spend in Austria. We will be coming from Zurich, through Leichtenstein, and stopping in Austria on our way to Munch. We have a rental car.

I have been to Berchtesgaden and Konigssee a couple of years ago and enjoyed it. She has never been.

We are a 32 year old married couple, looking for good food, culture, and memorable scenery. We are also open to vibrant nightlife if it is available.

So, your opinions are requested. Innsbruck or Salzberg for 36 hours?

Thank you in advance!

I would plump for the salzkammergut area of Salzburg, possibly visiting and staying on the wolfgangsee. maybe no vibrant nightlife, but fabulous scenery and good food.

by the way, when are you travelling?

Ah, yes, I should say that we plan to be there on the 17-18 September this year on our way to Munich for Oktoberfest.

Drive the Grossglockner High Alpine Road along the way to Salzburg (the northern entrance is just south of Zell am See) if you can at all manage it. It was a highlight of our trip.

Another nice high alpine road along the way is in western Austria, not far from Liechtenstein. The Silvretta High Alpine Road is not as spectacular as the Grossglockner, but it is still quite an excellent experience.
