Switzerland, Germany, Lichtenstein, and Austria Itinerary???

Hi,

I am planning to go to Salzburg in the beginning of August with 3 adults, one of whom is my elderly grandmother that grew up there, she wants to go back to visit her family there. We want to see as many countries and places as we can, while still being in Salzburg for around 2-3 days. We plan to rent a car, since my grandmother has difficulty walking. We want to spend as little time in Zurich as possible since we recently toured the city.

Would greatly appreciate anyone's advice or suggestions for changes in our itinerary, or places and things to visit.

land wednesday in Zurich at 2:15

go straight to Lucerne

Sleep in Lucerne

Thursday- drive to neuschwatzein castle

spend the day there and at hohenschwangau castle

Thursday night drive to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, Germany

Friday morning walk around for a bit and then drive to Salzburg

Friday evening to Monday morning spend time in Salzburg

Monday morning go to Lichtenstein and tour there

Monday evening or Tuesday morning go to Zurich to catch flight back home (flight leaves at 3 PM)

Is there a reason you're flying into/out of Zurich for a trip to Bavaria and Salzburg? Munich would the ideal choice to fly into/out of. In my opinion, the only place you are going to see at all is Salzburg, as you do allow 2 days for this. Tour around Lichtenstein? I wouldn't bother, it's so similar to anywhere in Austria or Switzerland. Sorry, but this trip, logistically, really makes very little sense to me.

So I just looked into flying into Munich, and the price difference is not that drastic from Zurich so that might be a better option, thank you! We just then wouldn't get a chance to go to Lucerne- is that not so worth it either, or are there better options in Germany/Austria?

You would suggest not going to Lichtenstein? Is it totally not worth it to go to? If not we will take it out of our trip and add something else in that is more worthwhile, what would you suggest?

Thank you!

Hi,

What you save in price flying into/out of Zurich you will easily spend in gas/tolls/time driving from Zurich and Lucerne to Salzburg and then back.

Lucerne is nice enough, but doesn't fit the bulk of your plans. Salzburg more than makes up for missing Lucerne. We stayed a night in Liechtenstein, actually our very first night ever in Europe, and I'll say that by skipping it there's nothing there that you're missing out on.

With just 6 nights for this trip, I'd:

1) Fly into and out of Munich. Pick up and return the car at the airport. Check flights, as we've had a Lufthansa/United flight home to Newark, NJ (EWR) that leaves Munich at 3:30pm on our last 4 trips. Also, check www.gemut.com (Andy Bestor) for rental cars. We've used them on our last four trips to Germany and Austria.

2) Spend 3 nights in Salzburg or Berchtesgaden. They are about 2.5 hours from Munich airport and they are less than 30 min. apart from each other by car. We prefer to stay in the Berchtesgaden area and have 5 times so far.

3) Spend 2 nights in Garmisch or Mittenwald. See Neuschwanstein from here. Better yet, see "Mad" King Ludwig's Linderhof palace instead. Better interior, closer and much less stairs than the interior tour of Neuschwanstein. Take a trip to the top of the Zugspitze here also!

IF you get an afternoon flight home from Munich airport, you could stay an extra night in Garmsich/Mittenwald and go directly to the airport from here.

There is not so much to see in Lichtenstein unless you want to hike. Nice homey country we just stopped by for a snack on the way to Italy recently but in your case you can do more in Munich.

Hi again,

You will not run out of things to see and do in the Salzburg, Berchtesgaden area or the Garmich/Mittenwald area with the time you have.

Salzburg

Salzkammergut (lakes area)

Spend a day on the Wolfgangsee. Drive to and park in St. Gilgen (1 hour from Salzburg), look around here, get a ticket for the lake ship and cruise to St. Wolfgang and Strobl and then back to St. Gilgen. Very nice way to spend a day.

Berchtesgaden has a nice old town

Konigsee (5 min. from Berchtesgaden)

Jennerbahn cable car (next to Konigsee).

Drive the scenic Rossfeld Panorama Road above Berchtesgaden.

There are salt mines, ice caves, etc, in the area.

Near Mittenwald/Garmisch:

Both Mittenwald and Garmich are worth seeing. They are 20 - 30min. by car from one another.

Linderhof palace

Ettal Monestary

The Zugspitze trip, Germany's highest mountain.

Karwendelbahn cable car trip in Mittenwald

Thank you so much everyone, these are fantastic suggestions!

We definitely plan on flying in and out of Munich now, we just checked up cars and it seems like it's cheaper to rent a car in Munich anyway. Our main goal is to be in Salzburg for 2-3 days, to visit old friends/family and for childhood memories, we will look into all your suggestions for the remaining days of our trip.

Thank you!

Glad to be of help. Yes, car rentals are cheaper in Germany than in either Switzerland or Austria. Please, be sure to buy an Austrian Vignette (toll sticker) for the windshield of your car. You'll want to buy the 10 day sticker for about 8.50 Euro. You can buy this at any gas station/rest stop along the highway after you leave Munich airport. DO NOT drive on a highway in Austria without this! By the way, the drive out of Munich airport and basically all the way to Salzburg is easy and well posted. In fact, right about the midway point on the drive between Munich and Salzburg (about 1 hour from either) is another of "Mad" King Ludwig's palaces, Herrenchiemsee palace. This sits on an island in the scenic Chiemsee (lake), so a short, 20 min. boat ride is used to visit the palace.

Main draw of Liechtenstein is the passport stamp and its quirkiness!
