Berchtesgaden

I am wanting to visit Berchtesgarden when we visit Salzburg in March for three days. Just wondered how easy it is to get there on public transport or would it be better to go on an organised trip (something I don't usually do.)

This is often asked here, so please use the search function of the forum for more comprehensive advice.

Basically, it is very easy to get there by public transport. Bus #840 (operated by RVO) links Salzburg with Berchtesgaden frequently. So you do not have to join a tour if you do not like.

Thanks for that but it looks like I won't be able to visit the eagles nest as it seems it only opens in May.

The bus (840) from Salzburg takes about forty minutes. After seeing Berchtesgaden, which is quite small, you could take the 841 bus to Konigsee lake (about fifteen to twenty minutes). Transport is frequent and very efficient in Austria and Germany.

The Koenigsee bus also takes you to the valley station of the gondola lift to the top of the Jenner (Jenner Bergbahn). The views from there equal those from the Kehlsteinhaus (the actual name of the Eagles Nest), and -in my opinion - the food is better than at the Kehlsteinhaus, it has a nicer atmosphere and - - - it is open!.

Are you on your own.

RVO Buses are german buses. You can get a day ticket from the bus driver for €9.50

Gives you unlimited use of all the Berchtesgaden buses for a day including the 840 and 841

Thank you all so much for your help. We will have to think again about our plans as it was the eagles nest we wanted to visit (just means we will have to visit Salzburg again!) On another subject does anyone know if the trick fountains will be open. Again there seems to be conflicting advice on this. We will be there on the 20th March so just before Easter. A report from someone in January seemed to indicate that the fountains were open but others say it does not open until Easter.

Thanks
