Trip to Vienna and Salzburg

We are a family of 3 (our kid is 12) planning a week holiday in Austria this summer. We plan to stay in Vienna for 4 days and in Salzburg for 3 days. We are not sure if after our stay in Vienna, we should rent a car to drive from Vienna to Salzburg and then back to Vienna airport. Or should we travel by train or even buy a Eurail Austria Pass for 3 days travelling which seems to be better value than buying train tickets with oebb.

We would also like to have advise on which area/ hotels in Vienna we should stay.

A car would be very expensive, and a Eurail pass would be even more expensive.

From Vienna to Salzburg it costs from €19 (child travels free) from www.oebb.at/en

or if you use the Westbahn service it costs €25 for adults and €1 for children - you buy that on the train.

I would recommend going by train to Salzburg (as GCEK has detailed above) and if you want to explore the mountains and lakes once you get to Salzburg you could rent a car for a couple of days while you're there. The Salzkammergut lake area and the Bavarian mountains just over the border are all fantastic places to visit and the car allows you to explore out of the way places. We always rent one while we're there.

Thanks so much for both of your advice. We will take the train to Salzburg and if time allows, rent a car.

Any recommendations on hotels?

What is your budget? Are you looking for a 3*, 4* 5* etc? What type of hotel are you looking for?

As a starting point have a look at the following three hotels.

First two are in the old town. Third is east of the river but still convenient for access to the old town.

Third one will give you the area to look for other Hotels.
