Salzburg accommodations and 3 day itinerary help - July 2014

Hello. Family of 4 (including 2 teenage boys) will be spending 3 nights in Salzburg. The kids would like to stay "in the middle" of things, shops, restaurants and pubs, etc. We are looking at several apartments ~ 150+ euros per night on Getreidegasse. Is this a convenient area to stay? Right now we are not planning on having a car.

We plan on arriving midday via train from Bled, Slovenia, then have two full days before we return to the states. We'd like to see - downtown Salzburg (can these sites be seen late in day?), SOM tour possibly, Eagles Nest and Hallstatt. What sites are convenient to combine in the same day? Husband wants to visit several beer gardens?!

Thanks for any input!

Getreidegasse is THE street to be on so a great choice if you want to be in the middle of the tourist area and attractions. Every sight is within short walking distance. The old town is very small so a day will be enough for you to see the sights. Don't miss a trip up to the fortress on the hill above the town. Hallstatt is really a whole day tour and you'd have to take an organised tour if you're not hiring a car otherwise you'd spend most of the day waiting for trains/buses/boats. You could combine the Eagle's nest with a visit to Berchtesgaden (also very small) or Konigsee lake which is in the same area. Plenty of biergartens to choose from. Most famous is Augustinerbrau.

I booked the Riverside Salzburg apartment with easy apartments. Very reasonable and only a 15 minute walk to the old town and a 10 minute walk to Augustinerbrau.beer garden. We are traveling with an 18 and 20yr old and they said they would bring in an extra bed that would fit my over 6ft son.

Without a car Hallstatt is a 5 hour round trip on public transport.

Eagles nest you can do yourself or use a company like this.
