Salzburg itinerary

Greetings:

We will spending one night in Salzburg. Looking for recommendations on which area to stay. Also looking for recommendations for a quick trip to the lakes. What is reasonable to do in a half day? Is it better to stay in the lake district rather than Salzburg.

appreciate your advice.

thanks

If you just stay one night I recommend to stay in Salzburg because it is a better base for travel. One night is generally very little to visit both the city and to take a trip to the lake Region of the Salzkammergut. You Need at least a full day to see the main sights of the City.

You could take a trip to St. Gilgen at lake Wolfgangsee. It takes about 50 minutes to St. Gilgen from Salzburg main rail Station. In St. Gilgen you can go up the mountain with the Zwölferhorn cable car for some great views of the lake area and some walks in the mountains.

Best regards, Christina

all credit to austriatourism for keeping an eye on these fora. they seem to be the only tourist office that gives advice.

but Christina is right. you would be hard pressed to do Salzburg city itself in a day, and as for getting to the beautiful salzkammergut, you just do not have the time. if you can only afford to spent a half day here this time, maybe you will return at a later date for a longer stay?

Christina,

Thank you so much.

I think this trip is just to whet the appetite and hopefully we come back soon.

We will plan on a half day in town and then another half day the next morning going to St. Gilen.

Many thanks

not sure if you are driving or bussing. if bus, get the 150 bus from the station or from the Mirabel gardens.

time by bus (which runs every hour)...45 mins. time by car...25 mins.

there is a ferry on the lake at st gilgen, and there is also a gondola lift to the top of the mountain, for spectacular views.

We have a car which should help us. Because of that, I am opting to stay on the 'new town' side by the Mirabel Garden. IS that a good idea or should I bite the bullet and navigate tough streets but stay in old town!

probably better to stay by the Mirabel gardens, it is only a 7 min walk to old town. parking will be easier etc. and access to road out of Salzburg far easier

The streets in the old town are not that bad if you want to stay in the old town. This is from a guy who doesn't like driving all that much in the first place.

You access the old town through a barrier where you buzz your hotel--they give you a code to punch in so you can drive to the hotel and unload your luggage. Then you go to a parking garage. Our hotel had parking arranged about a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel at 9.50 euros per day. It isn't really all that difficult to maneuver around--we were there in late June and early July.

If you don't have much luggage, you could also just go to a parking garage and then walk to your old town hotel, but it truly wasn't difficult to drive to the hotel. We stayed at Altstadthotel Weisse Taube.

Oh, it took us about 2 minutes to get to the road out of Salzburg from the hotel--but it depends on which direction you are heading in. We were going south to the Hallein salt mine and on to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.
