Salzburg as 'base'

Hi,

Looking to stay in Salzburg area in first week of June (hoping to stay in Haus Reichl! It looks quite charming!) We would like to take a day trip to Berchtesgaten, is it 'do-able' in one day? (Konigsee boat ride/cable car/Eagle's nest...of course, we would just play by ear and go when the weather was most promising) Also, what are some other day trips/ 'off the beaten path' things to do in the area? We love the outdoors, and getting out of the city. Thank you!

Yes, the Berchtesgaden Area can be seen in a day. Other options are:

Salzkammergut (Lake) District: Bad Ischl, Hallstatt, St. Gilgen, St. Wolfgang, Dachstein Mountain

Werfen: impressive fortification as well as another ice cave

Zell am See Area: http://www.zellamsee-kaprun.com/de

Großglockner High Alpine Road: www.grossglockner.at - car required!

Hi Lauren347,

Will you have a car or using public transportation? By car, Berchtesgaden and Konigsee are just 30 min. from Salzburg. You could also take a drive along the Rossfeld Panorama Road above Berchtesgaden. You may be interested in the Salt Mines and Sommerrodelbahn's, in Berchtesgaden and in Durrnberg and Hallein. All close to Salzburg. Hohenwerfen, mentioned above, is not far.

This past Dec. (for the Christmas Markets) we enjoyed a day out on the Wolfgangsee. We parked in St. Gilgen and took the lake ship to St. Wolfgang. It also goes to other towns and villages along the lake.

"Mad" King Ludwig's Herrenchiemsee Palace is about an hour from Salzburg. Basically between Salzburg and Munich.

I too used Salzburg as a base, traveled to Halstatt + Dachstein, Gosausee,Munich and Berchtesgaden on separate days. Turned out to be pretty good.

Hi Paul

Am enjoying reading your Salzburg posts and thought I might just seek your advice re skiing/ snowboarding in the area. We are a family of 5, both sons , 23&22 ski very well and daughters partner, 29, excellent snowboarder.... We wanted to stay on slopes somewhere with great nightlife for them and beautiful village for me :) plus be able to get public transport into Salzburg for couple of day trips (Sound of Music etc).

Just wondering if you have any suggestions as you seem to know area so well!

Thanks in advance

Sooty, Prue, never skied, so I really can't help. For "nightlife", I'd say Salzburg, but don't have any other suggestions. Hopefully someone else can give you some suggestions.

Hi! So sorry I never replied, but many thanks for your help, Paul! I have taken some of your suggestions, and we are planning a day at Berchtesgaden and a trip to Konigsee :) would love to do the salt mines, but it looks as if children under 6 are not allowed at most (we have a 16 month old) But thanks again for your help! :)
