Travel from munich airport to salzberg

Please could someone let me know is it best to purchase tickets for the rail journey on line before we leave or can we just purchase them on arrival at Munich airport. Can we get the train from the airport and if so where do we change to get the connection to Salzberg. I have heard about a Bayern ticket. Can this be used to travel from Germany to Austria ?

Also be advised that the name of the city is Salzburg - with an 'u' instead of an 'e'. Performing a train search or any search using Salzberg may get you to another place.

To answer the question in short - the Bayern Ticket is also valid for trips to Austrian towns bordering on Bavaria. Hence, you can also travel to Salzburg from Munich, using this ticket.

I can give you a longer answer now.

Critical question, What time does your flight land in Munich?

To check timetables use

From Munich Airport T

To Salzburg

If you want to see the timetable for trains that are valid for the Bayern tick the "Local Transport" box.

Enter date and time of travel. Note Bayern not valid for use before 09:00 on a working day.

You will see trains identified as S, M

S = S Bahn from the Airport to Munich Ost (East)

M = Meridian which is the new train operator since December 2013.

Travel time = 2 hours 17 minutes

Under savings fare green box with a tick. Click on the amount of money and it should say it's the Bayern Ticket.

The alternative is to un-tick the local transport and search again. You can get the S Bahn to the main Munich station then switch to an express train. Costs more unless one of the discounted tickets is available. They are available on line 90 days in advance. You can get for €29 for two adults. Downside you have to use a specific train from Munich main station to Salzburg.

Just got home from Munich/Salzburg. Train/tickets are easy right from the Munich airport. Down one escalator after customs. Train goes right to Salzburg and ends there so you can't get lost. Beautiful trip on the train!! City to Alps. Enjoy!!!

??? I'm not sure where you went to, but it wasn't Salzburg direct from Munich airport :)

You need to get the S-Bahn to Muenchen-Ost first, then change to the direct train to Salzburg there. If you use the Bayern Ticket it is valid on the S-Bahn and the Meridian regional trains to Salzburg as per no. 4 above.
