Trip to Vienna and Salzkammergut in September

Hi,

We are planning a trip to Austria for 10-11 days (we're a 30 yrs old couple).

3 days to stay in Vienna and the rest to stay at some small town in Salzkammergut and go to day trips of different kinds, by car.

Is 3 days in Vienna enough (first time there)?

Which town are more scenic and advisable to stay? Or should it be more than one place?

Is it reasonable to make day trips from Salzkammergut? If yes, then what should we visit?

I'm not sure if we're going to make it up to Innsbruck - how possible is it?

We like all kinds of activities - sight seeing, hiking, driving on scenic roads as well more passive leisure.

How's the weather conditions in early September?

Salzkammergut town base has got to be Bad Ischl. Weather in September normally good. Temperature maybe 15 - 25C. In the mountains so take waterproofs. Great time to visit all attractions open. Great time of year for walking and exploring.

Things to do. Check out the tourist web site for the Salzkammergut. Hallstatt Salt mine and viewing platform. Dachstein ice caves and 5 fingers viewing platform. Over 70 lakes with boat trips. Cog railway at St Wolfgang. Historic buildings in Bad Ischl. Walking, cycling, swimming, thermal baths.

cycling is very popular in Austria. I know that you can rent bikes in st gilgen, and then, due to the reasonable area, you could actually cycle all the way to hallstatt!. but going up into the mountains requires a bit more effort.

how about sailing?

as you are using a car, there are a lot of places that can be covered on a day trip. you could go as far as kitzbuhel with little problem. some of the other sites you could visit are Berchtesgaden (with eagles nest) , werfen castle, chiemsee and ludwigs island palace.

if you started early, you could even fit in a visit to the Grossglockner pass..

regards a place to stay, if you want a small town, then bad ischl is a good base, but if you would like a lakeside village, go for st wolfgang, st gilgen or fuschl

fuschl is very small and quiet. st gilgen is a good bit larger but retains a traditional feel. st wolfgang is very much a tourist village. if on the wolfgangsee, you can use the ferry around the lake visiting three villages. also has a cog railway as mentioned, a gondola lift etc

hallstatt is really a must if you are in the salzkammergut area. a bit quiet to stay in though.

The Tourist Information office for the Salzkammergut in Bad Ischl rent both standard bikes and 'E' bikes by the day or the week. Trains have special carriages allowing you to explore further afield.

Three days are basically sufficient to see Vienna, in the end it always depends on someone's pace and personal preferences. If you wanted to visit museums and other sights, shop a little and/or have a coffee in one of the numerous cafes, then more time would be highly advisable. If you did some side trips from Vienna, then logically even more time could be added. You could visit the Wachau Danube Section between Krems and Melk (and eventually beyond) either as a day trip from Vienna or on your way from Vienna to the Salzkammergut. As you will be in possession of a rental car, latter option might be suitable.

The Salzkammergut offers quite a few things to do which can easily entertain you for a few days. I'd stay at one place and visit the various places of interest from there. I'd also go to the City of Salzburg for one day, maybe by public bus then in order to avoid entering the city by car. Salzburg isn't a big city with severe traffic problems, but finding a parking spot may either be tricky or expensive.

Another daytrip option would be a drive over the Großglockner High Alpine Road (www.grossglockner.at), a pass road bringing you close to Austria's hghest mountain, namely the Großglockner.

Be aware that you need a toll sticker for the use of Austrian expressways (= roads with abbreviation A and S). An Austrian rental car will surely have it, I just wanted to mention it.
