Planning a trip to Austria in early Oct'14

We are planning to fly into Munich, rent a car and drive into Austria for a 5 night stay. Is Rauris a good place to make the base (hopefully in a country chalet) and visit places like Salzburg, Vienna, enjoy Austrian hospitality/culture, etc. Or would you recommend another Apline village...

first of all, remember that when you are entering austria from german, you will need to purchase a vignette at the border, to use the autobahns in austria. 8.50€ for 10 days.

next... a five night stay using rauris as a base and visiting salzburg and vienna? really not the best location. the distance from salzburg to vienna is about 3.5 hrs driving. i dont know how long from rauris to salzburg, but i reckon around 1.5 hours!

if salzburg and vienna are your main choice, you should be staying close to salzburg. the nicest area close to salzburg to stay, would be in the salzkammergut area, and i reckon st gilgen would be a good choice. 30 mins from salzburg and 3 hrs to vienna.

good for culture as it is called the mozart village, and you have st wolfgang on the lake too, accessible by ferry (and road) with its cog railway and the "white horse inn"

time from munich to salzburg...1.75 hrs.
