personally the tyrol,being at a greater depth into the mountains, might have more traditional charm. the salzkammergut in salzburgland is also a lovely place to hike. it just depends where you can find your guided tours
Whereas Salzkammergut includes part of Salzburgerland, the most scenic part of Salzkammergut is actually located in Oberoesterreich (Upper Austria) and in the Steiermark.
This beautiful lakes and mountains region (and rivers) stretches from Gmunden to Bad Ischl to Hallstatt and then to Bad Aussee and Ausseerland in the Steiermark.
I haven't been to Tyrol, so can;t compare, but I found the Gosau village to be fabulous, pretty much like the "typical Austrian village" I had in mind. And that's in Salzkammergut. Have a look at my pageon Gosausee: …wordpress.com/my-travels-2/…
I did quite a bit of walking in the area, pretty good well marked paths through forests.
