Innsbruck to Neuschwanstein?

We are visiting Innsbruck in Sept. 2012, and are thinking of renting a car and driving to Neuschwanstein for the day- returning to Innsbruck in the evening. Is this possible? What is the drive time to Neuschwanstein? Is parking available at the castle?

In answer to the 1st part of your question, check out ;

www.viamichelin.com very useful site - just plug in departing from and destination it will provide you with estimated times/tolls - if applicable.

In 2009 there was ample parking at the base of the castle - options were to walk up - ride a horse drawn carriage or catch a shuttle.

It is worth the effort to visit - beautiful place. ..... Safe Travels!

It's an easy and very scenic drive. If you don't stop on the way it shouldn't take more than 1-1/2 hours to get there. You can buy tour tickets for the two castles (or just one of them) online in advance if you want.

You could easily add some other sights like Linderhof Palace and the Zugspitze if you want to make a full day of it.

Hi,

The above is correct. About 1.5 hours non stop from Innsbruck to Neuschwanstein. Plenty of parking at the castles. No problem. If you have time, and if you're going via the Fern pass, you'll be passing by Ehrwald, Austria and the Zugspitze cable car.

www.zugspitze.at

If you don't want to spend the extra time getting to Neuschwamstein, another option after touring Neuschwanstein is the Tegelberg cable car and luge ride about a mile or so from Neuschwanstein. The luge ride (Sommerrodelbahn) by itself is a lot of fun.

Fuessen (10 min. from Neuschwanstein) is also worth a look. If you'd like to see another Ludwig creation, Linderhof palace is spectacular inside. Liked it much better than the interior of Neuschwanstein.

I'd suggest a "loop" drive:

Innsbruck to Fuessen (Neuschwanstein) via Stams, Fern Pass, Reutte. After Neuschwanstein, head back to Reutte and then go towards the Plansee, Linderhof, Ettal, and then Garmisch. From Garmisch, head to Mittenwald, Seefeld and back to Innsbruck. The entire drive with out stopping is under 4 hours, so is a good day oiut with a car.

Many places and sights to see, tour or stop at along the way. Mittenwald is an extremely charming village to stop for an hour or so.

Thank you so much! Do you think we'll have any bad road conditions to deal with in September?

If you mean snow... our experiences in Sept and Oct were mild days, maybe 60's to 70's and cool to chilly nights. Similar to fall weather here in NY/NJ area.

We have been to Neuschwanstein Castle in 2001 - loved it and agree the drive there is beautiful - a little windy.

We will be in Austria in August with my sister & her husband who have never been to Europe and we had thought about taking them to the castle. However I am almost certain that the majority of the castle will be covered in scaffold at that time so have decided against going. It may not bother you but better to be prepared.

MrHeckler: Unless you happen to hit a day in the middle of a snowstorm, you should be fine. They are very good about keeping the roads clear. Just in case, I would avoid some of the smaller roads or more mountainous roads, but you have several possible routes to chose from that avoid these types of roads.
