Dress up for the Musikverein?

Presumably not every night looks like New Year's Eve at the Musikverein, but what is socially acceptable attire for the music lover traveling light?

There is no official dress code for attending a concert at the Musikverein, but I wouldn't enter with jeans and sport shoes.

However, I would also not recommend dressing up as if you wrere going to a ball. For women a knee-long skirt and blouse and for man a suite (or even just a nice shirt and sports jacket) should be ok.

If you dress as if you were going to a nice restaurant, you should be obn the safe side.

It depends on the concert. If it's one of the tourist fodder ones like the Vienna Mozart Orchestra you will see jeans as tickets for these are sold under high pressure to every passing tourist by youngsters in period costume in the city centre! Many of these gullible victims don't have smart clothes with them. But if it's a mainstream concert the advice given is more applicable.
