neighborhoods + transportation

We want to rent an apartment for 3 days in Vienna. Found a great website with many options, but need help on picking a district. Ideally, we would like to be in residential neighborhood close to an U-bahn station. We like to stroll around to local shops and restaurants, but also want to get to the city center within 15-20 minutes on public transportation.

Which of the 23 districts would you recommend ? Are there any we should avoid?

Also, several apartments make mention of bus and/or tram stops. Are buses and trams good for getting around? Do they come frequently? Run at night? Move quickly through the city? etc.

Danke

It is difficult to cover all the requirements you have. Residential neighborhood + shops is a little contradiction.

Vienna is a particularly safe city, there are no real No-Go areas. I wouldn't seek an apartment in the 10th, 11th, 20th and 21st district. But this doesn't mean that it is dangerous there!!!

State some apartments and we will tell you the best one...

Agree with Mikey; is price what you are looking for? What apts. are you looking at? We usually stay out in Floridsdorf, which is district 21 and about 15 or so min from Wien-Mitte station by S-bahn, from there you can walk down Landstrasse to the ring or take an U-bahn and be there in minutes. The public transport is excellent, highly efficient and totally safe. Buy a 72 hr pass; an excellent value. Yes all the transit runs at night.

Thanks Mikey and Opetteman. I hope to narrow it down to two or three apartments in the next few days and will post those addresses.

I would also avoid the 15th district, you will find cheaper accomondation there but it also has some seedy parts.

If you want to go shopping but not in the expensive 1st district I would recommend stay around 4-7th district.
