On the train from Vienna to Budapest is it worth stopping in Sopron to walk around the old town for a few hours?
Trains from Vienna to Budapest DO NOT call in Sopron! They do not even pass it as trains use an other railroad located way more in the North.
Thanks for the advice- that would have really ruined our plans!
But it is basically possible to reach Budapest via Sopron. You would have to take a local train from Vienna to Sopron and then a Hungarian domestic service to Budapest.
Sopron itself is not that exciting but nonetheless worth seeing if someone comes (accidentally) close to it or has "too much" time in Vienna.Edited: 16 June 2012, 22:39
Thanks. I did check Rail Europe and saw it is possible. So taken your advice in mind we'll reconsider!
Keep your hands off Rail Europe!!!!! This company only re-sells tickets, usually for much higher prices than those available at the station just before departure. Moreover, they sometimes do not show correct times. Always stick to the REAL railway operators, in this case primarily Austrian Railways ÖBB (www.oebb.at) as your international trip commences in Austria.Edited: 16 June 2012, 22:59
