First time to Vienna - need Itinerary advice

Hello all! First time poster to these forums, so please go easy on me. ;)

My wife and I are planning a trip to Austria and Switzerland in the coming months, likely late April-early May. We'll be flying from the US, and will be heading into the Vienna airport for the Austria leg of our trip.

Our general plan at the moment is to spend 4 days in Vienna and the surrounding area before moving on to Switzerland. Is that too much time, or too little? There's clearly a lot to see in Vienna, but we don't want to burn days looking for stuff to do, if there are other areas we should be exploring instead of the city itself.

If it helps any, our general travel tactic is to hit the big ticket "must see/do" places first, then try to find a couple of intriguing things that are easily accessible, but are generally missed by most tourists. (oh, and we're both foodies, so noshing like the locals is always on our list, lol)

Thanks in advance for any help or advice! :)

You will need at least 4 nights in Vienna. First, you need to recover from jet lag, so you won't feel too good after you arrive for the first day.

There are more restaurants and cafes in Vienna than you can shake a stick at. Enjoy!

Pick a date you want to leave Vienna, and you can buy an advance purchase train ticket at www.oebb.at . There is a really nice "RailJet" every two hours from Vienna to Zurich. The advance ticket prices are really cheap ----- so check out the First Class fare, also. It's only 20 Euros more. And for an additional 15 Euros you can go in Business Class with a seat reservation included.

Yes, the flight to Vienna is a looooong one, and you will be jet lagged. We arrive in Vienna in the AM coming from Washington Dulles on a direct flight and are never good for much on the first day there. Other than to eat and perhaps get on a tram and ride around and around the Ringstrasse to keep awake until our normal sleep time that night! It is always a return trip for us and we love seeing familiar sights, but taking the Ringstrasse trams would also be a great orientation to the First District, the oldest and most historic part of the city.

I highly recommend taking the D Tram to Nussdorf to enjoy a heuriger there, where the wine taverns are not touristy and quite authentic. You can catch the D Tram on the Ringstrasse until it turns to go down to the Belvedere (at about the Staatsoper) and take it to the end of the line in Nussdorf. Then it's an easy ride back, catching the tram where you get off.
