My Last Hurrah in Vienna...Help Me Build an Itinerary

My wife and I have booked our last vacation together before we start a family (God willing). As it turns out, we will be in Vienna for my birthday (March) and I would like to make it a memorable one.

We will be travelling with another couple. None of us have ever been to Vienna and I am asking your help to build my birthday itinerary.

Things I Like:

Food and Drink

Top of the list. I'm a beer fan and my wife likes wine. Also, I love a good Schnitzel (which apparently isn't hard to find in Vienna). We will be looking for more causal places and non-touristy. We love a venue we can sit down for a few hours. Lunch, Dinner and Late Night options all welcome.

Also, I speak fluent German, so non-English speaking establishments are OK too.

Cultural Things:

If I spend the better part of the day in a Gasthaus drinking beer and eating schnitzel, my wife will be mad at me. So we need to take in a bit of the local culture.

Odd Things:

I'm not into going to traditional Art Museum per se. But I do love seeing things that are different. The group I'm with isn't afraid to try things that are a bit strange.

Thank you so much for your help.

There is no better place to spend your birthday! I've done it a few times :) Odd things - I LOVE going to the Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof). This is where the compasers are buried and/or honored (Europe's second largest cemetery marks the final resting place for over 2.5 million people, including Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Strauss). I also LOVE going to the Kapuziner Crypt (Kapuzinergruft). Finally, a tour fo St.Stephans is not complete without a trip to the catacombs.

Make sure you get a kasekrainer and a bier at one of the wurstl stands and just watch the people.

Hope you have a blast.

You must visit the Naschmarkt, which is a large open-air market. On Saturdays, there is also a large flea market. You can see all the stalls selling all kinds of great food, and do consider eating in one of the market restaurants, also. Restaurants are open into the eveing, whereas, the regular market closes late in the afternoon.

If you like beer you must go to the Wieden Braeu http://wieden-braeu.at/en/home It is very good and always full of locals.

For exciting and 'different' things to do go to the Prater and ride the Prater Tower---the highest chairoplane ride in the world---it's fantastic. Hire bikes and cycle the green Prater. It's wonderful. Enjoy!

We like the schnitzels at Schnitzelwirt (Neubaugasse 52), walkable from Mariahilfstrasse shopping street. The serving portions are huge and very affordable. Just bear in mind there's a smoking room at the front you have to walk through to reach the non-smoking room at the back.

Cultural things – could see an Opera (standing room tickets).

Enjoy a good walk and great food at the Old Danube. Great Schnitzel , also the real ones made out of veal, or try the Pariser (same as Wiener but without breadcrumbs)

http://www.strandcafe-wien.at/

Easy to reach with U1 till Alte Donau, so you can combine it with a visit at the Donauturm , and then walk over to the other side of the Old Danube for the restaurants and afterwards you can enjoy a walk for digestions.

If you want walk all the way till the end approx 2,5km and you will find U2 Stop Donaustadtbrücke which will bring you back to the City Center.

If you are into cakes , why else do you want to come to Vienna *ggg*

go to Gregors http://www.gregors-konditorei.at/, U4 Stop Pilgramgasse

or try Fruth in Kettenbrückengasse http://www.fruth.at/

How about having a coffee, lunch, dinner in Motto am Fluss http://www.motto.at/mottoamfluss/

Or visit the Jazzland http://www.jazzland.at/

Many more options to find in Vienna
