Christmas Weather

My husband and I are considering a Christmas/ New Years vacation to Vienna. I understand that the temperatures will be in the low 30's. What I would like to know is if it is a damp, "chill-to-the-bone" type of cold or is it a crisp cold?

It is very difficult to predict what the weather will be like, especially in this age of global warming

Sometimes it is less than 0C, sometimes up to 10C (rare to get that high), but generally in between the two.

But if it is very cold, then it is generally crisp.

We've found the cold in Vienna can be quite biting with very cold winds at times. You can get cold fogs as well.

The one thing about being in Vienna during this time is that there are plenty of Cafes to warm up in. Also walking around in the cold makes one have a great appetite, which is perfect for the hearty cuisine you can get in Vienna. You will be there during Christmas so there is Punsch available in the markets...that will keep you warm as well!

I am not familiar with cold fogs. Sounds damp - am I right? Is rain common at this time? I don't mind crisp cold. Wet cold - not good! Also, windy weather does not sound desirable.

I am really torn. Vienna sounds like a wonderful experience - just not sure of the weather in December.

You have to take what the elements throw at you - it can be crisp cold and minus 15C, it can be snowing (unusual), it can be +8C ...

As long as you wear layers and make frequent use of the many cafes as described above, and enjoy the Christmas spirit which abounds in most central European cities at that time of the year, the meteorological conditions, clement or otherwise, should play second fiddle to anything else.
