Car Rentals

We will be visiting Vienna for several days then plan to make our way to Salzburg. We really like the idea of being able to stop and explore smaller towns along the way and so we are thinking of renting a car. We have never driven in Europe before. Is this a good idea? What is the drive like from Vienna to Salzburg? How long does it take? Is renting a car difficult in Vienna?

It's an easy drive. A direct journey would be about 3 hours by motorway, but as you intend to explore you could easily take a full day or even have an overnight stop! No shortage of rental places in Vienna.

A car will give you a maximum of flexibility and makes a lot of things easier as long as you avoid cities. So if you would like to visit smaller places between Vienna and Salzburg, then go for the rental car. Driving is easy (except Vienna) and very similar to the US, maybe the fact that the majority of cars have a manual gear could bother you. Get a feeling for the geography of Austria by studying online maps (such as maps.google.com) and use the search function of the forum in order to find info on possibloe routings.

Rental companies do hire automatics if that is what you prefer but they will charge extra. Getting out odf Vienna to the autobahn can be difficult but much easier if you hire from the airport rather than city centre. Everywhere else is easy even Salzburg so you will have no problems. You will find everyone abides by the speed limits which in towns and villages will be as low as 50k (28 miles per hour)or even 30k (18 mph) past hospitals and schools but you may be surprised by the speeds on the autobahn at times!!

Thank you so much for your responses! Any other towns you would recommend driving to from Vienna or Salzburg? We enjoy scenic drives, exploring unique small towns and trying small, lesser-known restaurants. We don't have a lot of time so preferably it would be an easy day's drive.

driving from vienna to salzburg, it is a good idea to go down the walchau valley, visiting the likes of melk and durnstein. you could also branch off to linz , the centre of which is pretty nice

if renting a car in vienna, and dropping off in salzburg, there may be a one-way charge. if going on to munich or another country, the charges will increase considerably!
