Vienna Classical Orchestra and Quartets--Opinions/Suggestion

Hi everyone...

If you've seen the following orchestras, quartets etc and can give me your opinion and perhaps a rating of best to worst, that would help me a lot. We have five days in Vienna and I'd like to make the most of them....Here's the list (maybe this isn't all the orchestra's? I got this off a website)

Vienna Residence Orchestra

Vienna Royal Orchestra

Schonbrunner Schloss Orchestra

Salon Orchestra Old Vienna

Kursalon Vienna Concert

Vienna Mozart Orchestra

Vienna Heurigen Show

Mozart Ensemble (Mozart Haus Concerts)

Vienna Hofburg Orchestra

Please tell me anything you know.....this is my first time in Vienna. We are going to Salzburg the following week where we have tx for the Int'l Music Festival. So excited!

One question: There is at least one venue that does not have air conditioning. Its called Orangerie Schloss Schonbrunn. I am thinking its better to pass on a room with 600 people and no air conditioning in mid-July. What do you think?

Carol

Most venues will not have air conditioning.

Most on your list are tourist oriented mediocre concerts - over priced for quality received in my opinion.

Often the advertised orchestra/ ensemble. 20-25 members

The Schonbrunn Orangerie - the former wintergarden of the palace- exotic plants stored there in winter.

Some think there get a room in the palace itself- unfortunately not.

To me the best of the list is the Mozarthaus concert

www.mozarthaus.at.

Fine old music room in city center- among the oldest concert venues.

Less than 150 seating.

Heuriger show is most probably at Heuriger Wolff ( Wine tavern) in the northern part of the city

some enjoy this different evening.

I agree with Vertical that the Mozart string quartet in the Sala Terrena is quite nice. The venue is very intimate and the restored sala most delightful. This was Mozart's favorite performance venue. I would guess, though, that it seats about 50 people max. The musicians themselves are very capable --no fault there at all. And unlike what we have heard about some of the other "tourist" venues, the audiences there have been very respectful and are properly dressed. We have spent two delightful evenings there and would go again when we return to Vienna.

Norman, if this is the same poster from Rick Steves it will be in mid July. I have given her almost exactly the same advice as Vertical on that forum and informed her that all of the major performers/orchestras will not be in town during that time.

Norman,

No worries

I'll be back in Austria (though not Vienna) in September. My brother and I will be having a long overdue (15 years) reunion to hike in Lech am Arlberg for 8 days and then over to Funes in Sudtirol.for 7 more days hiking the Dolomites. Put my biking trip on hold for another year for this one. Of course my Jack, Thor, will be along as well. I have already checked and there will be Sturm in Lech during our visit. We plan to eat very well while in both locations.

Sounds great. Does Thor cope well with long walks then? Our Cavalier can't easily manage more than 6 miles!

Hey Norman......glad you got a nice conversation out of this thread...with James. He did answer all my questions and then some.

James--have a great hike! How nice that you'll reunite with your brother.....

Norman,

Thor is a Colorado Jack and does great on the long hauls. He has been to Lech before and loves the trails (not so much the large bovines with the bells.) He will miss not being able to return to Wien though. :-)

Idyllwildgirl,

Not James, on RS it is Alex from Longmont, CO.

I hope you will heed the advice and stay away from the venues you have listed. The ones I gave on RS will be much more authentic. But that being said....in the end you must decide what you want.
