Is This Doable in 12 days?

Trying to figure out how much genealogy and sightseeing we can do with 12 days on the ground. Is this doable?

We will rent a car and probably fly in and out of Oslo.

Thanks for your help!

The trip is doable in 12 days if you have done your research in advance. There won't be much time to do genealogy research on the way.

A comment on the place name Nes: Many places in Norway are called Nes, notably at least three in south-east Norway only, Nes, Romerike, Nes in Ådal and Nes, Hallingdal. You have targeted Nes, Romerike on your map, are you sure it is the right one? As Gulsvik, Hallingdal is already on your list, could it be that you are looking for the neighbouring community of Nes, Hallingdal? Thank you! After doing a little more research and inputting the correct places, here is an updated map:

The genealogy research is already done, we're just visiting the sites. Plus we want to spend a couple of days in Oslo and 2-3 days in the fjord region around Bergen.

Too much?

It is possibly a bit much, but doable.

In your latest itinerary you have chosen the quickest, but also the least interesting highways for the distance legs, E18 and E39. Driving from Rjukan to Kristiansand through Nissedal (as in version 2) or Setesdal would be more interesting than E18 and not necessarily take longer.

From Kvinesdal to Bergen you may consider a more scenic route through Sirdal, Ryfylke and Hardanger, 42-468-500-13-7.

From Bergen to Nesbyen E16-52-7 is OK if you make a stop in Gudvangen or Flåm and take the ferry on the Nærøyfjord. Other options are E16-50-7 or 7 all the way, See overview of driving routes between Bergen and Oslo made by our fellow TA Brainspin: http://jiffymade.no/

Thank you so very much. That is exactly the type of information I need in planning our trip. I will definitely look at those more scenic routes. By the way we are traveling in July of 2013. I would love to hear more suggestions for things to do along the scenic routes, or worthwhile detours in the area.

In Borgund (near E16 in Lærdal) you can visit the ancient stave church

Near that church there are several generations of roads pass this difficult point in the valley (E16 in dull tunnels)

Even if you choose the E16, small detour up road 50 from Aurland is rewarding

or up Aurland mountain road (best panorama):

You are both awesome! I have looked at the alternative, more scenic routes that you have suggested. How ever will I choose which FABULOUS route to take? They all look amazing. Thanks so much!
