Norway in ten days or less in September/October

Hi all. We're looking to go to Norway in September/October. We're looking at being away for around ten days and want to see as much as we can in this time including Oslo and the Fjords.

We are considering driving our own car and getting ferry from the UK to Denmark and driving up to Norway or flying over to Oslo or somewhere in Norway and then hiring a car. We'd also consider trains, boats etc but we're looking to do the trip on a budget.

Has anyone got any tips on the above and also what would be a good itinerary for ten days? Ideally we'd like to see the Fjords, Oslo and also Northern Norway but know the latter may be pushing it in the time we have. Many thanks.

Taking the ferry will consume a couple of extra days compared with flying. If your 10 days includes travel days then you will be left with 6/8 whole days in Norway, hardly enough time to consider driving up North. Note that the week around September/October is half term holiday in Norway and some flights/ferries may be booked up early. September/October is also very late season in Norway and you may encounter snow on crossing the plateau between Oslo and Bergen and on tourist routes in the fjords. Generally temperatures will be quite cold. However the autumn colours can be fantastic and lack of crowds can make this a good time of year to travel if you are properly prepared.

If there is snow you should not attempt the journey on your own car equipped with summer tyres. If renting a car you need to discuss with car hire company which tyres you need for intended journey. Some attractions and accommodation may be closed out of season. Doing a circuit Kristiansand - Stavanger - Bergen - Oslo - Kristiansand would be reasonable in a week.

You might also consider just visiting the North with a flight to Tromsø and catch the northern lights.

Also be prepared for rain and wind all day and possibly every day if going to the Western Fjord area at that time of the year.

Driving your own car from the UK will take up the best part of a week for the return trip (depending on where you live in the UK), not just a couple of days, so not really practical if you only have 10 days in total.

Flying to Bergen or Alesund would be a good starting point for a self-drive holiday and you don't need to be concerned about winter driving conditions in the surrounding fjord areas if you avoid high level roads and check weather forecasts. Many hotels in the fjord area close at the end of September but there are quite a few that stay open and you will be able to make a very enjoyable tour with hardly any other tourists around. If you would enjoy visiting the Lake District or Scotland at this time of year you will have a great time in Norway.

There is usually no problem driving on higher roads late september (we usually change to winter tires early November), but occasionally there can be snow above 800-1000 meters. Ask locals or call 175, but you will usually get a hint from summits around. Temperatures below 5 C at sea level means frost in the highland.

Autumn can be brilliant
