driving in Sweden and Norway

We are planning to buy a Saab in Sweden, pick up in Trollhatten, drive to Norway and return to Sweden to return the car. Any suggested itineraries, must see sights, etc? We would be traveling in August and have 14 days to tour. Thanks, LHN

Hmm, bying a car to have for holiday only? I have heard about this for US vacations, but never for Scandinavia.

Here are some thoughts about where to go:

14 days are not much, because of the long distances and pretty louse roads, specially in Norway.

* Start with driving to Oslo, thats about 300 km (takes 5 hours).

* Next stop should be Bergen, on the west-coast of norway (another 500 km, about 6 hours).

* Drive north to Aandalsnes, through the fjord area). 600 km, 24 hours. This part could easily be cut by just driving to see some fjords.

* head north to visit Trondheim (600 km), or head east for sweden (800 km).

* In sweden, you should try to reach Stockholm, a beautiful city build around the waterfront.

* The trip could be finnished in Malmo, the southernmost city in Sweden. Close to Copenhagen.

Thanks for your message and driving suggestions.

To clarify, we are buying the car. After our vacation, we return to Sweden, drop off the car and it is shipped back to the US.

Thanks, LHN

Take into mind that gas is expensive in N. (and S). As of now, close to 11 NOK/litre, (6.15 USD/gl).

You might consider visiting North Norway, too, but then, drive thru Sweden, better roads-

Bergen is a "must-see" for foreigners, Trondheim also nice

We are planning to pick up our new Sabb in July. We plan to spend about 3 weeks in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. We've been working with our trusted travel agent and plan to fly into Stockholm then take a train to Gothenburg, pick up the car and head to Oslo. We plan to visit Lillehammer then back to Sweden to see Sarna, Upsalla, Visby, and Copenhagen. From there we'll drive the Danish countryside then to Skagen to the beach. We'll return by ferry to Stockholm.

Idbriggs:

sounds like a great plan.

You certainly will cover a fair part of the scandinavian landscape.

You will not be able to see any norwegian fjords, except the Oslofjord. Therefore - to get a feeling of the norwegian coastline, make a daytrip about 2 hours south of Oslo (ex. Tonsberg, Fredrikstad, Sandefjord).

Lillehammer should be nice, but perhaps more exciting wintertime.

In sweden - try to get out from Stockholm onto one of the many islands right outside the city.

In Denmark, Skagen is the best place to visit! Good choice.
