Svartisen glacier

We have just a day in/around Bodo, early June, with car. Is it possible - or a sensible use of time, to try to get to Svartisen glacier? ( we arrive in Bodo around midday)- and if so how would we do it? We prefer to spend more time on our feet than in the car, so if it would be difficult to do, can anyone suggest good alternative walking/hiking experience that is maybe special to the area? At this time we should hopefully be able to take advantage of the extended daylight to make the most of our time? - and we do plan to time a visit to Saltstraumen before we leave next day. Thanks for any info or suggestions.

I should maybe have said, we don't want to do an actual glacier hike - well, I don't, having had one terrifying experience a long time ago!

It is not difficult to do, but it takes time. The distance to the boat to take you across the fjord for access to the glacier is 170 km or 2,5 hours drive from Bodø. It is a nice drive along Route 17.

Can you say how often the boats run, and until what time? If you could point me to the ferry provider/timetable, that would be much appreciated, this is the part I've got stuck on.

It is a bit shorter than I first said

Timetables for the boat (read the footnotes closely)

Thank you, very helpful. I think our problem lies in the footnotes! we will be just before the extra crossings are added for the main summer season, I think we will struggle to make it in time for the midafternoon boat- and it would probably be a bit silly to be trying to race along the Rv17, when the views on that would be part of the reason for going anyway...

If anyone can suggest a good scenic hike for us to consider as an alternative, from Bodo, that would be much appreciated.

You may find something here, but it will be too early for the real peaks.

This district is also great for exploring caves:
