Day trips from Narvik

Hi everyone, wonder if you can help.

We're staying in Narvik for 6 days in November. The main reason we're visiting is because it's the most northern place in Europe you can get to by train - and we are railway 'enthusiasts' shall we say...

Anyway I appreciate it'll be cold, dark & snowy at this time of year, so what is there in Narvik and surrounding areas to fill our time? We don't mind hiring a car or using buses / trains to get about.

All thoughts / suggestions welcomed xx

First of all; Rent a car!

Then for your information, it will be dark... It's polar nights, so you will have daylight from 10 am to 1 pm, but the Northern lights will light up the night..;)

Places you can drive, to south: Tysfjord, Steigen and Hamarøy. To west, and north west: Lofoten, Vesterålen and Andøya. To north: Senja, Tromsø and Lyngen alps...

Drive safe on the icy and hopefully snowy roads. Enjoy!

Thanks for the reply Gunnar.

Do you know if it's cheaper to pre-book hire car or arrange locally on arrival?

Considered Tromso but wondered if it would be too far to visit as a day trip?

Tromsø is too far for a day trip, but why limit yourself to day trips?

Narvik is not a terribly interesting place to stay, I would rent a car and go for a 5-6 day drive to Lofoten, Vesterålen, Senja and Tromsø. It is always interesting to book a rental car in advance - easier to shop around on the net.

It's 250 km from Narvik to Tromso, so you can always do it on a day. But I agree with Iverh, quit your hotel if you have booked and go for a longer drive.

Since you are rail people, Tromso have a railway station, but not a railway (!)...
