Island Hopping in Oslo Fjord

We are arriving in Oslo this coming weekend and will be in Oslo for about five days. On one of these days, we thought it would be fun to do a bit of island hopping via ferry, assuming that the ferries are not affected by the strike of course.

How easy is this to do?

Are there any islands particularly worth checking out?

Any considerations that we would be likely to overlook?

Thanks!

Hi Jonathan,

The only island worth exploring in the inner fjord is Hovedøya ("The main island"). You can see some of it in this album:

The ferries leave from Vippetangen. You can enter bus no. 60 or 60X from Jernbanetorget (Railway Square) for the port.

The other islands are mainly cabins or camping areas.

Did you forget Gressholmen, greek-traveller? I think it is nice to walk around there. It also has a nice café:

Boat to Gressholmen from the same place - Vippetangen - as the boat to Hovedøya (often, it is the same boat).

For a day trip, the ferry 602 from Aker Brygge (just west of the City Hall) to Drøbak could be recommended. In the weekend, you could take the 10 a.m. boat from Oslo, jump off at Håøya (which is a big, uninhabited island) , spend several hours picnicing before taking the 16.55 or 17.55 boat back to the city.

You could also go all the way to Drøbak, which is a nice, small town at the seaside, and either take the boat or a bus back.

In my opinion all the islands in the Oslo fjord has it's own charm.

I think it's a good idea to visit some of the islands close to the city (and island hopping is a cool way to experience the islands). Personally I like Hovedøya, Gressholmen and Lindøya best (has a lots of cabins, but I think it's pretty charming to walk around on the island ).

If you want to go on a longer boat trip there are of course a lot of other nice islands not so close to Oslo (and Drøbak ans Oscarsborg is a good idea as well).
