Northern Lights

Planning a trip in September. How far north would I need to travel to see the Northern Lights?

Well above the arctic circle like Tromsø or Lofoten Islands. And preferably close to or after the equinox when the nights are longer.

Please check more facts about the areas you should visit... http://www.visittromso.no and http://www.lofoten.info

A hot tips is to fly via Oslo to Bodø, and then take http://hurtigruten.com for some days in the Lofoten islands, before you continue to Tromsø, where you also can fly to, with http://www.wideroe.no

You can also fly directly out / in to Tromsø from Gatwick, London with http://norwegian.com

September is a lovely time to chase the NL, in combination with blue sky and the glow of the sun in the horizon... and of course, the landscape are painted in autumn colors..;)

It's a slightly ambiguous question as the northern lights are dynamic. Some nights they are visible in Tromso, a few times per month in Trondheim, and a few times per year in Oslo. But to maximise your chances of seeing the northern lights on your visit, they are quiet "reliable" in Tromso and Alta. So it is those towns I would recommend you head to.
