I've planned a surprise visit for my wife for 3 nights and 3 days in January 2014.
We fly into Trondheim on late Friday night and will probably stay over in a hotel near the airport (suggestions welcome).
I know that Trondheim is too far south to see the northern lights and was planning to rent a car and drive up towards the north. Our flight back to London is on Monday evening from Trondheim.
My queries -
1. How far north should I aim to drive to have a realistic chance of seeing the lights? I'm comfortable driving for 3 odd hours each day but will need to factor the drive back to Trondheim in Monday.
2. Any suggestions of where we could stay for the next 2 nights - preferably one location for 2 nights.
3. I've been told that the E6 highway is quite well maintained in winter and that snow and I've should not be a problem for driving - except of course in case of blizzards etc. Any confirmation appreciated.
4. Anything else that we can do/see given the time of the year and the area?
Appreciate any help from the community.
