ferry travel from UK to Norway

What is the best/cheapest way - if any way! - to do this? My husband hates flying. We hope to travel in late June/July 2012.

We have no preference where we start from - we live in Scotland so have to travel anyway - and don't mind where in Norway we end up!

Many thanks in advance

It is really too bad, but there aren't any ferries between the UK an Norway any more. There used to be a regular ferry between Newcastle and Bergen but it stopped running a few decades ago. Your best option, if you don't want to fly, is ferry Harwich-Esbjerg, drive Esbjerg-Hirtshals, from Hirtshals you may get a ferry to Kristiansand, Stavanger, Bergen or Larvik.

There is one possibility. The DFDS freight line between Immingham and Brevik does take passengers if there's room. Contact DFDS for more information and prices: ukpax@dfds.com

Just basic accomodation onboard but all meals included

The Immingham-Brevik schedule is posten on the page I linked to. The crossing takes between one and two days (depending on which crossing).

I understand that your husband hates flying, but if you can make your way from Glasgow to Aberdeen and fly direct to either Stavanger or Bergen the flights take only 1-1,5 hrs. Several daily departures. Cheap tickets available if you book early. Just a thought as I don't know if this option you would like to consider or not.

Not sure how long you are planning to stay away for? We have booked the DFDS ferry from Harwick to Esjberg which is an overnight crossing, end of July 2012. We will spend a couple of days in Copenhagen and we have then booked the ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo for a few days there. Further, we will take the train from Oslo to Bergen via Flam and then rent a car for touring the Fjords.

Plans are being made to reinstate the ferry between Newcastle and Bergen, hopefully from next year. So with luck, you won't have to travel via Denmark. The boats will probably be smaller than the ones trafficing the route until it was disbanded in 2008, but in the summer months the sea isn't too rough, so this shouldn't be a problem.

Any news on these plans to reinstate the newcastle to bergen route, who will the new operators be, rumours have been around about this since DFDS closed the route.

That article covers the faint ppossibility of a ferry between Aberdeen and Norway.

The Newcastle-Bergen route has been in the news in Norway every so often the last year or so. Last October it was reported that serious talks were in progress and they were close to an agreement, but didn't want to say anything about who was involved. Since then it's been dead quiet.
