Fjord near bergen

Hello, is it possible to visit any of the fjords near Bergen on a budget within one day? We are in Bergen on the 28th of December. I have seen you can get a bus to Odda which I believe to be on the edge or Hardanger Fjord, am I correct in thinking this and is it worth visiting for the day this way? The Norway in a nutshell trip seems fairly pricey so we are attempting to look into alternatives. Any help would be much appreciated!

Norway in a Nutshell is just a do-it-yourself tour on public transport so doesn't come much cheaper than that. What you are suggesting with Odda is a version of the Hardangerfjord in a Nutshell just using a bus there and back as I suspect the boats aren't running or schedules don't connect. For Handangerfjord see http://www.hardangerfjord.com

For bus timetables see https:/…

For costs count on about kr100 per hour - it's not easy to find the price on the net, you'll need to find the zone map, count the zones and then find the pricetable - good luck with that. Ask at the bus station.

You could also take the bus or train to Voss and take the Hardangerlinja bus back to Bergen via the Hardangerfjord area, timetables here (lørdag=saturday)

You need to leave nice and early to make your trip within the daylight hours. Worth it or not depends on the day. When the clouds are low and the visibility is poor ( a very common weather situation at this time of year) it would not be much point in going. The good thing is that you can just decide on the spot.

You could take the passenger ferry to Balestrand from Bergen:

Unfortunately, it goes only after it has become dark :(

Going to Balestrand in winter is not really recommendable and certainly not possible as a day trip on a Saturday. On weekdays it would probably be possible, but I would recommend Sogndal rather than Balestrand out of season when Balestrand is completely dead. On weekdays it should be possible to take the morning boat to Sogndal and find a bus to return to Bergen on and avoid 10 hours on the boat. But I suspect it would not be much cheaper than the original NiN which the OP found too pricey.

I would recommend doing the NiN round trip, honestly I think it is the best option in winter.
