Currency for tours in Norway.

We are on a cruise along Western Norway in June and will be stopping at many ports, including Bergen, for one day at each.

There are many sightseeing tickets we will have to buy at Tourist info offices and other places in port. Will they accept Euros or will we have to exchange the currency? Do they have currency exchange at all tourist info offices in all the ports, even the smaller ones like Tromso or Honningsvag?

What about shopping and eating joints? Will they accept Euros? What's the best way to do this, and the most economical?

Will be really grateful for useful info I can get. Thanks.

This comes up often in this forum, the currency is NOK (Norwegian Krone) not euros. Some tourist places may take euros but you will get a poor exchange rate and any change in NOK.

Use a debit card to withdraw NOK or pay with a debit or credit card. There are ATM's in all towns.

The cheapest and best exchange rate is to use a card for all payments and avoid cash altogether. You can, and locals do, use a card for the smallest purchases and they are accepted everywhere - I have difficulty thinking of the last time I needed cash. On a cruise visiting ports you will have no problems using cards and will not need cash. Just make sure that you are not charged foreign transaction fees etc. You should use Visa or MasterCard - Amex and others are not accepted everywhere.

Thanks a lot for the info. Good idea. Will Visa or Mastercard charge us foreign transaction fees or commission? Do tell me. The cruiseline and other currency exchanges charge 3% or more commission.

Waiting to hear from you.
