Best way to do The Paths of Trolls arriving by cruise ship

We will be arriving in Alesund on cruise ship around 8am till 5pm. Has anyone taken a bus trip on the paths of trolls? Will it be easy to walk from the dock to rent a bus tour or is there public buses that can take you there? Since weather is so unpredictable in that area we thought of waiting till we get there and maybe getting a bus. Or is it better to rent a car and do the drive ourselves? We will greatly appreciate any suggestions or tip. Thanks!

It is possible to do a round trip with public transport to Trollstigen or to Geirangerfjorden, but unfortunately none of the possible trips will fit your time frame, you would not be able to make it back to Ålesund before 1700.

All the bus tours from Ålesund available to the public are with public transport.

If you don't want to join an excursion organized by the cruise line, your best option is to rent a car and drive. You can do a round trip including Trollstigen: https://goo.gl/maps/8hbyv

or a round trip including the ferry on the Geirangerfjord: https://goo.gl/maps/qM8EF

In theory it would be possible to combine the two, but I'm afraid it would be a rushed and stressful trip.

If you choose the Geirangerfjord option you should book the ferry Hellesylt-Geiranger in advance: fjord1.no/turistruter/geiranger-hellesylt2

"The Path of Trolls" is a bad translation of Trollstigen, "The Trolls' Ladder" or "The Ladder of Trolls" would be better.

Sorry, Iverh, "Trollstigen" correctly translates as "Troll's footpath". The word "stig" means "footpath".

The Troll Road National Tourist Route would be my suggestion. Perhaps they rely on google translate ! :) Or no translation at all - simply Trollstigen.

Visit Norway translates it as Roller Coaster in their adverts :)

You are of course correct, OsloViking. Still, imagining giant trolls with 7-mile boots using the hairpin road as a ladder is a more picturesque interpretation :-)

We are arriving in Alesund via cruise in August from 8am-8pm. One of the people on our roll call found information for a private van through Alesund taxi service. Does anyone have any knowledge of this service? I'm hoping that it will be more like 8 hours so we have time to go to Mt. Aksla viewpoint, but not sure if that is reasonable or not.
