8 day Sognefjord...detail question

Hi experts,

We are departing for our 11 day Oslo/Sognefjord trip in a few days. We are planning 8 of those days in the fjords, based out of a cabin in Kaupanger. We are 5 adults looking for a mostly active vacation and have a car rental. We have most of the details hammered out, but a few questions remain...

We will either do Flam or Jotunheimen on the day we check out of the cabin, then have one 'free' night before heading back to Oslo. So, we can turn Flam OR Jotunheimen into an overnight trip, not both. If it's Flam, we do the Kaupanger-Gudvangen cruise/Flamsbana/bike, sleep in Aurland, and do the Stegastein/snow road/Borgund stave church en route to Oslo the next day. If it's Jotunheimen, we will sleep in Lom and drive to Oslo the next day. Whichever we don't choose as the overnight will just be a very long day trip from Kaupanger.

Do any of the experts have any suggestions on which we pick?

If we do Jotunheimen as a day trip, we will hike from Turtagro or Leirvassbu...if we do it as an overnight, we could go farther north for the starting point.

Thanks for your help!

Ashley

Both your planned excursion to Flåm and a drive to Turtagrø and a hike from there are feasible as day trips from Kaupanger. If hiking is a priority I would suggest you do Turtagrø as a day trip and pick a day with good weather. The activities you have planned around Flåm are less weather-dependent.

OTOH the driving route to Oslo via Lom is more interesting, especially if you drive route 51 across Valdresflya. The choice is yours.

Good point about the weather. We might just decide once we see the forecast while already there. Thanks!

Visit Norway What's this?

Hello,

The road across Valdresflye provides endless views of rolling hills and steep mountains, including an excellent panorama of Jotunheimen National Park. Please visit our page about the Valdresflye National Tourist Route: visitnorway.com/en/…

If you have a car you don't need (and should not in my opinion) planned too detailed in advance. Instead look at the weather and perhaps you discover something interesting you did not think about.
