Drive from Heathrow to Taunton

We are driving to Taunton in October from London;would anyone have any suggestions of places to visit on the way,or hints for the drive?

We will visit Stone Henge on the drive back when time permits.

Many Thanks in advance!

HI, From LHR you have two main routes... M4, M5, or M25, M3,A303,A358... the latter route will take you past Stonehenge....

Not much to say about either route otherwise, the first is Motorway all the way, the latter is A-roads, but having driven both (many times) there isn't anything to chose between them in terms of timings...

The A-roads will take you near and through some villages where you can stop for a break...

Driving by Stonehenge you get to see as much of the stones as you do with a paid admission so if you drive past on your way to Taunton you can then decide whether it is worth stopping on you way back

How long do you have for the journey ? and do you want to get to Bristol and then leave the M5 and travel through Somerset, or are you happy to get off the motorway and use A roads ?

If you leave the M4 at Hungerford and join the A4, you go through Marlborough (nice tea shops and market place), then pass Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow, with a slight detour to Avebury*. There is also the White Horse at Cherhill, which has great views, then on to Bath (for late lunch ?). After Bath head to Wells and across the Levels through Glastonbury and Street. Wells is worth an hour of anyone's time, 2 if you go into the cathedral.

*An antiquarian wrote many years ago 'Avebury is to Stonehenge as a cathedral is to a parish church'.

Not only can you see Stonehenge you can drop off the motorway to Bath and on down to Lacock, Wells & Glastonbury. Wells I would recomend, not a lot at Glastonbury and Bath is lovely but a busy city.

Depends if you need to go straight to Taunton and where you are going after.

The 303 is good for me as I can pull off for a picnic but as you are coming off the plane the Motorway, at least part way is a good idea.

Thanks for that;yes we can allow a slow drive-about 4-5 hours,we have been to Bath and Bristol before and would like to see another town or two:-

Wells sounds interesting

Is Stone Henge really worth going in with admission?

I know there are Stone Circle Access tours but they don't operate in October!!

I love Wells. It would be a nice stop for a long journey. Very old & beautiful, quiet, the smallest 'city' in England, tea shops & open grass. Just a few shops.

But the main thing is the Cathedral, simple and beautiful. Quite a surprise compared to many elaborate ones. It's also on the Somerset Levels with the King Arthur legend among many others. There is a road from there across the levels with swans in the reens and willow shops (it's grown there).

The levels are in complete contrast to Exmoor just down the road.

Definitely go via Wells.

From Heathrow you could come via the M25, M3 and A303 then turn onto the B3081 through Bruton, an attractive village, then the A371 through Shepton Mallet to Wells.

The cathedral is stunning and there are free guided tours. Make sure you visit Vicars Close too - it feels as though it's a film set rather than a place where people actually live (it's currently featured here on TV adverts during the Paralympic Games). Interesting individual shops in the city too.

Leaving Wells go to Taunton via the A361 and you pass Burrow Bridge where the ruins on the tor are in my opinion more spectacular than Glastonbury.

Wells is a very good suggestion, just watch the speed cameras on the A303, it is a fast road and they can catch you out (I speak from experience!).

Are you landing at Heathrow from a long haul flight then driving? If so don't unless you want to become a statistic.
